The 2011 Chilli growing thread - it's scorching!

How do you set up the tub? I like the idea of being able to see if anything happens. At the moment I'm intently staring at mud :D

I just popped the seeds on top of some wet toilet paper and closed the lid. That way, you can open the lid every so often and have a peek.Just make sure its warm :)

I recommend buying a cheap digital thermometer from ebay. Getting the temp spot on seems to be key to fast germination.

These Scotch bonnet seeds are germinating after 3 days. I'm sure I read that they can take weeks. I kept the temperature at 30oc by adding more insulation to the top of the padded envelope I had them in.

This is mine, cheap but it works.

Cool, i'll try it!

My set-up last year was much better, not sure I'll get as good results this time round.

Yep :D. Both sets of seeds all have little shoots.

Still waiting on the jiffy pellets turning up. I wasn't expecting them to germinate this fast!

Its funny to come back to the thread and see people talking about thermometers, since i just bought myself two last night :P

Seeds haven't broken through the top of the soil yet, been in since Friday.

Though i did disturb one seed that i put in extra to check and it has started to germinate if only a tiny bit.

Gonna see if i can get the temps spot on once i put my thermometer to use.

Also ordered some LED's and resistors to try and make my own grow lights :)

Yup, the Nagas will be slower than the others. It's quite comical how the other species zoom ahead but the naga tortoise then just keeps going until it towers of the others!

Always think that the naga stems have a great colour patterning - green and purplish.

Looking good, the hab may want a little breeze to strengthen the stem.

I'm about to start getting my seeds in the pots after last years bumper harvest. However I've not got much that is "that" exciting. Can anyone recommend anywhere to get some Scotch Bonnets, or Naga's (hotter the better :D)?

Last year as mentioned was bumper, but, and the big but, I got a little ahead of myself, I started all the plants off inside the house, then as they all grew stronger I moved them all outside onto the patio. Fruit was amazing, but I forgot to label, and also kind of let everything die over winter (should have researched and bought stuff inside!) - this year I'm going to grow less, but pay more attention and bring plants inside in the winter.

I enjoy cooking a lot as well, with my speciality being chili - I've used so many of my home grown chili's in my chili (I'd gladly give the recipe to anyone wanting it). This year I'm going to make some of my own crushed chili's, and chili oil. Plus I have a friend who has a rather amazing tolerance to chili heat - so the hotter I can grow the better

Edit: anyone who has spare seeds, I'd gratefully take them. Specifically after hot stuff, but nothing refused.

I missed this earlier, I also have some seeds (orange habaneros, twilight, ring of fire, some scotch bonnets). I'm not sure how well the scotch bonnets will germinate, I haven't tried to grow them this year from seed, but you're welcome to have some to try. Take your pick!

I managed to keep my home grown scotch bonnet plant alive over winter. It is 2.5 feet tall and looking healthy. It grew from a seed last year and produced about 20 chilli's many of which are now pickled.

Have some seeds going if anyone is interested.

I've just received some scotch bonnet and habanero chocolate seeds.

How many should I plant (20 in a pack), oh and how many plants are people maintaining at a time?

My over-wintered Super Chilli plant doesn't seem to be doing anything yet, it's sat on my kitchen window sill which is the brightest place in my flat, and is nice and warm.

Sadly, I think it suffered some over watering recently and ended up sitting with about 2 inches of water in the bottom of the decorative pot the flower pot stands in, for a day or two. Is it likely to have died? I do hope not.

ps Dale I'd be very interested in your chilly recipe too.

Hehe question is do you want to be overrun by chilli plants and have chillis coming out of your ears? :p Bit of a catch-22 as you don't know if they'll germinate and when you attempt to correct for any non-germinations they all will..

I have only have three plants here but I started with 5 jalapeno and 5 naga when they started. The plan is to grow them this year again and harvest some seed from them as they'll be three years old this year.

In the first year the jalapenos provided a massive load of chillis. The Nagas only totalled about 6 from three plants. Last year each of the overwintered Nagas put out at least 30 fruit (I think it was something over 100+ fruits in total). I gave away my jalapenos in the first year.

Which reminds me - I must order some Chilli Focus for my over wintered plants.

Chilli recipie as requested

Slow oven cooked chilli recipe:

2x 500g packets minced beef
A lug of olive oil
2x diced white onion
x2 garlic cloves (crushed)
Good heaped tablespoon cumin
1x Oxo cube
1x chicken stock (I use Knorr)
1x beef stock (I use Knorr)
2x tins chopped tomato's
2-3 table spoon tomato paste
1/2 to 3/4 bottle Merlot
1x tin red kidney beans
x2 table spoon Worcestershire sauce
A good shake of balsamic vinegar
Dash of red wine vinegar
4 squares of 70+% cocoa dark chocolate
x2 tea spoons sugar
Plenty black pepper
A couple pinches of salt.

For spice I add:
Good shake crushed Jalapeno’s
1x tea spoon hot paprika
Good shake hot chilli powder
Good shake crushed chilli's
As many chopped chilli's as you like (I add about 3)

Brown meat off first using olive oil and a pinch of salt (a good lug will do) – add meat (and juices) to a big pot.

Obviously you can trim / add to the spice to taste, my other half doesn't have as high tolerance for spice as I do so I tone it down from the above for her.

Some of the ingredients above can disappear, I use them because I have them available (red wine vinegar can go, chicken stock can go, use any red wine you have, and the chocolate just makes it silkier (the sugar takes the acidity out of the tomato’s) – I’ve tried and tested the above and it works well for us, and I sometimes use one red and one white onion also.

Stick the pot in the oven at 160 C for as long as you can (over 3 hours), stirring every 45min to an hour or so. If it needs to reduce for the final hour take the lid of the pot, but stirr every 20min or so.

Like all good home cooked chilli, this is always better left in the fridge overnight and re-heated the next day, but still is awesome that evening - I get a load of mates round, make a massive bowl of rice, massive platter of nacho's (layer nacho's, then grated cheddar, then repeat till you run out of nacho's, cover the top in cheddar and mozzarella, bake for 10min on high, then cover in salsa, jalapeno’s and serve with guacamole and soured cream as a side)

Pudding – Pah, if you can manage a pudding after that then you are on your own! :-)
