The 2011 Chilli growing thread - it's scorching!

Poor quality pic. But this is my prize Cayenne at the moment :p

My 'Tesco finest sweet red pepper' plants are doing great, but the scotch bonnets have slowed right down. Think they might be outgrowing my 40w light and need some real sunshine!

might give some of this a bash. I can buy some plants that have already started to grow from some places right?

I've got like a pen for my tortoise in the garden with a semi-green house like covering over half of it to keep them warm. I could put a couple of plants under there to keep them warm and give them the full benefit of the sunlight.

Pots far too large i think to have em in at such a young age imo, should have waited till more leaves were on imo. When you repot btw there will be a shock and do look like there not doing good but should recover in 24-48hrs or so.

They where like that before the repotting and really haven't done much in almost two weeks.

My Scotch Bonnets are growing slow too. Exact same conditions as the Cayennes but they are still really small.

Yeah sure. I think B&Q had some in the last time I visited. They weren't in the best of nick but places do have them.

Acid, what's the watering schedule you have? As for me i water a little bit just enough to moist the soil by doing little drizzles so it soaks through and when it comes out the bottom you know you have done too much and to stop. Most of the time it doesn't come out the bottom as you get a feel for how many drizzles to.

Dont let them dry out too much but dont soak em if u know what i mean.

This is just some advice if it was a watering issue. Leaves would droop if watered too much.

And dont worry about the leaves being up and curling in a bit mine do that too atm. Not sure why but they are healthy and growing fine.

Also if i am right they had long stems so you burried them to just before the leaves, if so then the stems will be trying to root which will cause some slow growth till roots have established a bit. But this is good because your plants will have a strong root structure which in turn will help later in the plants life. :)

As for them being like that for two weeks before repot. Im not sure but to me they look healthy. Maybe they were just a bit slow.

AcidHell, I've got the same problem with the slow growth. The Scotch Bonnets have grown very little in the last month, but gradually they are getting there I think.

Skeeter makes a good point about the watering as I think I killed one of mine off from over-watering early on, just after germination. I'm watering less now, like Skeeter with the drizzles..! They seem healthy enough. Once roots develop and the leaves start to grow lager, I'm sure they will pick up!

Wouldnt it be better to pick the flowers off so they can focus more on new stems and such. I picked my flowers off of a jumbo pepper as it was trying to bud but i need to encourage growth so i will have a much bigger harvest later.

Finally going to repot mine tomorrow there coming along slowly. But they just get natures sunlight from the back window will be going into my portable cheapo greenhouse with the tomatoes sometime in april. Got some B&Q plant food for vegtables.

What on earth compost to use for my pots I was going to get miracle grow potting plant compost? Also when I take them out of there little coconut pots do you shake the soil off and put them in the new stuff or leave them in the shape they are dig a hole in the new compost. That probably sounds stupid.

I was hoping i could leave em in propagator longer but their stretching a lot so im gona repot em tomorrow i think.

5x on right Apache chillies
Top left is Early Jalapeno
Rest are tomatoes, pink brandwine, micro toms, tumbling toms, gar delight.

@Dave18. Which pots exactly because some pots can be potted in bigger pots i.e the plants roots will grow out of and the organic pot will biodegrade over time. So basically you take your seedling in a peat or coir (coconut fibres) pot and put the whole thing in when potting up i.e dont take the seedling out of the organic pot when repotting up. As for soil. These might be somit to think about. http://is.gd/q5l4p7 and http://is.gd/HaXz7w

Also dave from reading your past posts it sounds and looked like you were giving them too much water as the soil looked heavily watered to me. Also not enough soil in one of them. I also see they are coconut ones so dont remove them when repotting their designed to be moved with ur plants when potting up. Also for greenhouses, i have a mini 4 tier one and the last frost date for north east of uk is around may so im not sure where you are in the uk but check the last frost dates and dont move anything outside till all risk of frost has past so if anything like me it will be mid may you can move outside in a greenhouse or open soil outside. But with chillis they do far better indoors so imo keep ur chillis indoors.

General advise. When watering seedlings dont use cold water straight from the tap let it sit for a good day so as it stabilises or somit with the ph i think it was also it helps keep it room temp as plants hate cold water from the tap as it would often be too cold to put straight on soil for em. Also to avoid drenching plants/seedlings. Use a watering can or something like one of these http://is.gd/tOZ1qd on a medium or large bottle or a good spray bottle. It helps spray the water more evenly and gently than say a cup of water or jug pouring heavy amounts of water in certain spots whcih will soak the soil too quickly etc.

yes i have done this, when a flower opens in a place i dont want it to, i snip it off so the branches grow longer and then i will let them fruit.

p.s your seedlings are going leggy because they do not have enough light!! they are stretching to find it!

Oh yeah i know they are stretching cos of that but im not worried too much as i will be burying them up to their leaves which will give a good root system.

I could have popped em under a 128w dual spectrum bulb setup but i need to clean it from last year a bit and stuff which i keep putting off.

Well repotted mine in bigger pots but not too big used some miracle grow vegtable soil thats recommended for chillies etc gave them a little water. Now on the window and now just to sit back and wait for the sun to work its magic. Will put them into my little greenhouse but to be honest I dont think any will succeed in doing there thing they seem so slow.

I like spicy things but just looking at this thread makes me want water.

I remember having a Birdseye pepper and almost dying. I couldn't breathe for ages.

At what point should you re-pot them from the propagator? I've got a couple that have their second set of leaves coming through now

Yeah id get them out of the propagator now. Make sure they get plenty of light. I've only ever used a propagator to encourage seed germination.

Anyone know if polycarbonate is as good as glass for a greenhouse? Got a 6x4 greenhouse off our neighbours for free but its missing quite a lot of glass. It'll be expensive to buy new glass so was thinking of getting some polycarbonate instead.

It doesnt look to be as transparent as glass, just wondering if that will make a big difference?

cheapest i can find is about £120 for polycarbonate for the full greenhouse. Still a lot cheaper than if i was to buy a brand new one I guess.
