The 2011 Chilli growing thread - it's scorching!

I dont normally correct people, but people might not have the desired effect with soil from Damascus  I bought 2 bottles of diatomaceous earth from amazon for about £15 (for carpet beetles, this stuff seems to kill anything!) and it seems to go quite a long way. The only trouble is its like talc so any breeze while you're applying it and you're wearing it :P. You might want to invest in a cheap mask as I've heard it can be nasty if u inhale it. I had problems with spider mite on my plants last year and ill be giving this stuff a go for that too.

Haha, must have been the spell check, I'm pretty sure i didn't type that :o.

Not chilli's but peppers.
Bought a Johnsons Seed pack that contained a propagator, soil discs and seeds- Cayenne, California Wonder and Friggitello. It was £3 from Asda.
Planted a couple of weeks ago and over the weekend they seem to have propagated from when I check last Wednesday. Three discs haven't appeared above soil but if you look closely you can see some green.

I'd probably think about it over the next couple of weeks. I'm in a similar position to you, albeit with only 3 plants :P

I'm trying to offload a few of mine now but no one seems to want them! I wasn't planning on all of them growing so planted a few more than I wanted to keep..

I can't believe how neat and tidy all you guys are.
Just re-potted mine think i need to up the watering was giving them a good soak every 9 days, but I think maybe 5-6 days instead as they where bone dry when I re-potted them. Especially under those lights high 20's low 30's 18 hours a day. How often do you guys water?

Also just put some others on to germinate

How often do you guys water?

I water much more often than that. I burrow down into the soil a little bit with my finger to see if it is moist or not and then water accordingly. I seem to be watering every other day normally. But I watered both Saturday and Sunday this weekend as it was fairly hot on the windowsill.

I have a few pots of "super chillis" growing at the moment. They germinated nicely in a propigator and I repotted them into pot, though had forgotten that they don't really like to go straight into large pots, and put them into some 7 inch pots.

That was about 2 weeks ago and since then, they don't seem to have grown hardly at all.

I've been making sure the soil is not too dry nor too wet, but they just don't seem to be growing. Would I be right in thinking they are probably just growing roots at the moment due to the large pots and hence not growing much above the soil?

Will they start to grow properly or have I failed for the year?

Anyone any thoughts on this?

They're getting a reasonable amount of light, kitchen window sill is pretty good for light in the afternoon, though the morning there's not huge amounts of sunlight coming in there.

Been sticking them in the sun as much as possible and the leaves are starting to darken a bit ready for going outside it's just that they're not growing very much.

Been pretty careful with the watering too, making sure they're neither too dry nor too wet.

Some seed growing/multi purpose compost would work just fine!

I'm only asking because I did sow a few seeds in some John Innes No3 compost I had left over. 50% of the seeds didn't germinate and the ones which did grew slowly compared to the seeds sown in the multi purpose compost.

I pricked the ones that did germinate out into the multi purpose compost and they grew much better.

yeah I don't understand why people say they don't like big pots, the world is a big pot and mine went into super growth as soon as I stuck them in a large pot.

I think this advice is more relevant when you're planting a small plant into a massive pot later in the season. As the plant will just put all its energy into growing roots and foliage and the flowers will just drop off. I've had this happen to one of mine that I put straight into a big 5l pot as I didn't have any 1 litre pots left. It finally started producing some peppers far too late into the season and they all went soft and fell off :(.

The one that i put into a 1 litre then into a 3 litre gave me loads of peppers, and i put it into a 5 litre while there were peppers on the plant and then they got a lot bigger.

Hi Guys,

I've just started growing chillies myself for the first time, and I'm wondering what the white little pellets are in the soil here?

So far I've got infant Apaches, Cayenne and Cheyenne growing, but am waiting on some Scotch bonnets, Numex Twilight and Jalapeno seeds to arrive. I may be too late but I'm giving it a go anways :)

When germinating, is it best to keep the seeds in a dark, hot area, rather than under a windowsill?

Cheers :)

It is perlite to help with drainage and airate (sp) the soil. In the pic the poster has used too much perlite tho.

Some seeds like sunlight to help germinate and to grow to a point of a light source.
