The 2011 Chilli growing thread - it's scorching!

A layer of perlite may work well for these. It stops them thinking the top of the soil is moist from what I remember. Also dunk watering helps as the time between watering is longer and therefore the top dries out for longer periods.

I had a major problem with both fungus gnats and aphids last year

Fungus gnats i fixed with an extra layer of perlite on the top and the aphids were sorted out by some online Ladybirds which decided to stay in my greenhouse until everyone of the little ******* had been eaten

Hi All

New to gardening and chilli growing. Am looking for recommendations for very mild flavoursome chillis. Cant eat them very hot at all - so the milder the better.

This sounds about right for what you're after, but Habaneros need a long growing season as plants take around 100+ days to fruit.

Pimento chillies would be a good shout too, if you pick the fruits early enough whilst they're still green, they shouldn't have too much heat.

This table should give you a good idea of relative heats of different chillies:

Am I the only one that thinks the Scoville rating is a bit pointless for the average chilli head once you reach around 1,000,000?

Bearing in mind I can down a bottle of tabasco sauce, the Nagas I grew last year were... hot, regardless of the scoville rating :p

I got my HPS through these guys:
However, it's not clear but a CFL system with 1xred and 1xblue bulbs would be a single light assembly with one of each bulb to use by swapping between them. They're quick to respond to email.

I'm now trying to decide if I should be considering a CFL Light kit for my Naga and Habanero's once they sprout. Due to me living in the north of Scotland, light levels at this time of year tend to be a bit hit and miss, so it would take some of the guesswork out of light exposure.

125W mixed red and blue bulbs seem to give the best of both worlds - anyone have any recommendations for online purchases? I'll end up using a cardboard box with some reflective foil taped on the inside, so I shouldn't need a reflector, just the bulb and mains cable should do the trick.

Cheers

I recently bought a 125W Blue Spectrum CFL bulb, reflector and 10m of Mylar all for £27 on eBay :) Best place to look really! Or if you don't trust the 'Bay' try Greens Horticulture.

Also a friend managed to get a few bits from a police raid a couple miles away... all free. Grow tents, HID Bulbs, Reflectors... the lot  .

Oh and...

Jalapeno loop after 5 days!

Red during fruiting blue during growth stages.

Anyone know of any cheap but good seed banks? Dont think i want to go ebay route this year.

Also can anyone spec me some chillis to try. I want plants that produce a lot not just a few and i like the jalapeno heat range so around that level. I do plan on jalapeno and apache and hopefully another jumbo bell pepper plant from seeds i gathered. Would like roughly 3-4 more types.

Also if you have any spare seeds please consider the seed swap room.

Hello,

Very interested in growing some chilli's this year. However, I live in a ground floor flat which doesn't get much sunlight (though I have mutilated my large privet bush to get some more light in). Also, some rooms aren't that warm though I could probably set up a warm room for plants. How warm does it have to be, and are there any particular chilli's that don't need massive amounts of sunlight. I know the importance of sunlight but there are plants which grow with minimal light.

So, basically any tips for a beginner without ideal growing conditions? Size of the plant doesn't matter, and hotter the chilli the better.
I noticed Enzo offering seeds, and I'd be eager to get some of them but don't want to take them if there's no hope of flowering plants.

yea i know sand is suposed to be really goo aswell, wilkos had already got rid of the gardening stuff last year so i couldnt buy perlite/vermiculite to stick on the top and i dont have a clue where you can buy sand locally, dont have a car so BNQ etc is out of the question.

letting the pots dry out and only watering via dunk didnt really help much it stopped them beeing so many but they were just breeding in the bottom half of the pot and the adults were coming out of the drainage holes

i tried chemical spray i had aswell which aparently kills them and it didnt do anything ! , even stole my wifes cinamon sticks and tried crumbling them all over the pots as rthey arent suposed to like it but meh...

unless i can find some sand locally i give up..

Naga seed envelopes prepared - will mail tomorrow, slightly delayed due to work but they should get to you folks before the 1 degC forecast next week during the night.

Careful handling the bare seeds. I just used my fingers to sort them out and I must have touched the gum strip on the envelopes because now my tongue is burning lol. :D

I still have some seeds left :)

And yet one of my Habs has just started coming out after 7-8 days :o

Are you sure they're warm enough? Soil moist? Etc.

There above the radiator so should be warm and im keeping the soil moist. I might just bin them if nothing happens in the next week or 2 and get some stuff from a garden center. The soil disk etc that was in the kit didnt feel very good. :p

Im going to try my luck at chillies this year my sister got me a kit for xmas with three different types. My plan is at the end of Jan stick them in a heated propagator in small pots, then pick the best ones to put in bigger pots and move outside once it warms up.

hello all,

my lovely wife bought me a chilli growing kit for christmas.

i planted them on the 27th december and theyre growing more and more each day. my placement wasnt too good for the first few weeks and only the front 2 pots seemed to be getting sunlight.

i have taken pics of the progress.
