[[[The 2022 Gym Rats Thread]]] ᕦ(ò_óˇ)ᕤ

all good ill get through it. been going since end of January and feeling very good. Benched 50kg yesterday very happy with myself. Thought id get blisters/caluses a bit later on though. is it true if you grip harder theres less friction so less blisters?
Well done, onto to 60kg now. :D

Yeah I suppose so, depending on how decent your grip is you can hold the bar more on your fingers than palms.
At my old gym the lat pull down machine had an extremely spicky bar that was almost painful to use!

funny you say that as i am 90% sure its lat pulldowns that are causing these mostly haha. i think its the grip combined with the movement.

I've been using BSN No-Xplode for awhile now.

Most pre-workouts are iffy, they either need to be used as a daily driver due to having creatine in or they simply don't have the amounts of the ingredients needed to have a positive effect. Most tubs are filled with a long list of questionable crap, that said some are decent and well priced. I've been using No-Xplode for a little while now and I double scoop before a heavy workout. I supplement creatine separately, it's cheap as hell and for most people is a flat out benefit.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/BSN-Xplode-Pre-workout-Supplement-Packaging/dp/B093CSSV32/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=bsn+no+xplode&qid=1646870696&rdc=1&sprefix=bsn+no+xp,aps,55&sr=8-1

Main thing with this is it actually gives you the amount of things like beta-alanine and citrulline you need in order for it to be effective, at least if you double scoop. The caffeine is obviously a big positive and it's on the higher side per scoop, but if you're at all sensitive it might not be the best route for you.

If you abuse the Amazon subscribe and save system you can pick up a tub for £15 or so per flavour every month.

Thanks for that. It looks good and also better value than what I was looking at.

However one thing that puts me off buying from the River is the reviews. Some people say that the market has been flooded by fake BSN No-Xplode.

I saw the same thing when I wanted to buy some whey a few weeks ago and was put of getting any from the River due to the same issue. Reviewers saying the powders where fake.

By the way does this contain creatine? I cant see it listed in the ingredients but when reading reviews this one says it has creatine in it.

I already supplement with creatine so dont want to over do it.

No it doesn't, I think an older formula might have and combined with the awful way Amazon handles reviews you have a few remnants of that.

I've bought a few tubs of the stuff now for around £15 a pop and they've all been legit.

Personally I still suggest saving your money. There has been very little actual scientific studies supporting the use of MIPS. I mean they do have a mild ergogenic support but that's mainly the caffeine and the fact that it makes your body feel a bit more "ready". In terms of actual performance enhancement etc that has not really been conclusively proven.

That said it can give you that mental readiness impact, and let's face it a lot of work out is also a game of minds.

Even assuming that's true, at £15 a tub for 30 servings of 200mg caffeine per pop?

I've seen caffeine pills go for more.

Amazing how a week of good eating and sleep can result in more weight than lifted previously flying up with little effort. I am really struggling with eating though, one week of reduced appetite and I drop a couple of kg. Mostly fat I think, but it’s a real grind right now, as I think this year will be.

What alternatives are there to myprotein? Protein prices on there are absolutely ridiculous currently. Nearly double what I used to pay.

A few of my workouts have gone backwards, but squats are steadily moving forward as they have done since the first lockdown. Nearly on a 200kg+ working weight. Deadlifts now more in line with squats. I took a progress photo in the mirror and I can’t believe how much bigger my arms and shoulders have gone.

Bulk (formerly BulkPowders), GoNutrition, TheProteinWorks. Need to wait for 40-50% off sales or BOGOF but it's still more expensive than it used to be wherever you shop.

In other news the guy I used to train with sometimes, after retiring from powerlifting last year due to his hip capsule exploding shortly after pulling 370kg sumo for a UK record at <100kg un-retired, had to switch to conventional and relearn to squat narrower and higher, but just pulled 368kg for a <105kg British tested record at his comeback meet at the weekend. Big lift!

That's a heck of a lift. My deads are so crap these days. I always wanted to hit 300kg but that's a pipedream now. The fact he had to relearn how to lift with a different technique makes that even more impressive.

Is there something about the sumo stance that increases the likely hood of damaging your hip capsules? Or was he just unlucky.

I think it was mainly a consequence of consistently taking his body close to the limits of it's capabilities - he trained at a high intensity all the time and ultimately when you're regularly moving that kind of load, whether in the absolute sense (+300kg pulls, mid-to-high 200kg squats) or relative sense (under/over x3 bw) then there's going to be wear and tear. I think the injury happened during a warm-up rather than a working weight or comp lift; straw that broke the camel's back sort of thing. Powerlifting can be a bit of a graveyard at the top level though so he's not an unusual case.

I think since he started training again he's been a bit more conservative as far as submaximal training, and obviously has to now avoid putting his hip in a position where the compromised tissue is loaded heavily but he's too addicted to training for performance/numbers to give it up and just do bodybuilding or train for aesthetics.

Get the honey browser extension and it often finds decent codes for Myprotein. My last order i managed to grab 38% so 5kg of whey protein isolate for £85. This was comparable to all of the other places Somnam suggested!

Protein prices have gone up all over the place especially isolate. If you're just after whey and done care about all the other fluff in the product things like serious gains for £35 for 5kg can be found, although the protein content is questionable once you hit these bottom end products.

However i am after recommendations for protein pancake mix if anyone has any! i am more then happy with unflavoured from myprotein, just wondering if its anything special or if i could make my own with unflavoured whey and instant oats even?

I think most of the bulk suppliers get all the stuff from the same sources so it's really just a case of who has the best price and the actual products are all pretty samey although some tend to have flavours others don't.

I usually just buy unflavoured Milk Protein (whey/casein blend) from MP and use the assortment of 0cal FlavDrops I've built up so I'm not stuck with kilos of the same thing and use that for either proats or to make more of a sludge/fluff. Rarely have protein drinks.

Haven't tried pancake mixes but I'm a fan of the mug cake mix (although there's an initial learning process of specific mug w/amount of liquid and cooking time). Tried the 'Protein Dessert' mix too which is like angel delight but it's way too sweet for my liking. Could probably find recipes on YouTube or search for this stuff because it's largley just protein powder and a couple of other bits mixed in, but I'm lazy and like the convenience factor.
