Any one use a pre workout supplement?

Are they worth it?

For example I have been looking at: Optimum Nutrition ON Gold Standard Pre-workout Advanced with l-Citrulline, Beta-alanine and Caffeine which is £24 for 20 servings.

Alternatively I could just buy some caffeine pills which are cheap.

Caffeine pill and banana. :D

I've been using BSN No-Xplode for awhile now.

Most pre-workouts are iffy, they either need to be used as a daily driver due to having creatine in or they simply don't have the amounts of the ingredients needed to have a positive effect. Most tubs are filled with a long list of questionable crap, that said some are decent and well priced. I've been using No-Xplode for a little while now and I double scoop before a heavy workout. I supplement creatine separately, it's cheap as hell and for most people is a flat out benefit.

Main thing with this is it actually gives you the amount of things like beta-alanine and citrulline you need in order for it to be effective, at least if you double scoop. The caffeine is obviously a big positive and it's on the higher side per scoop, but if you're at all sensitive it might not be the best route for you.

If you abuse the Amazon subscribe and save system you can pick up a tub for £15 or so per flavour every month.

No unless you like the flavours. Caffeine is really the only potentially useful thing in preworkouts that might have an acute benefit for lifting weights but even then the doses required mean you have to take time of day into account otherwise it might disrupt your sleep due to the long half-life (which then might impact recovery and subsequent performance).

Beta-alanine's efficacy is more for endurance type stuff as far as possible benefits in exercise performances. Citrulline... maybe a small ergogenic effect for explosive / high velocity movements but for some reason is often advertised as a pump thing (which has nothing to do with performance).

Buy caffeine pills and spend what you would have on pre workouts on better quality food.

Coffee + banana has been my staple for 20+ years. BCAAs during workouts can help if you're really pushing at 90%+ for over 45mins but pre-workouts just give you that "pump" feeling and really unless you really are pushing yourself to the extreme really don't offer much other than good marketing.

I don't take pre workout anymore, just tend to get on with it or just have a coffee. However when I did take it I used to like C4, that was my go to.
Things been going too well for the last few months so of course I manage to pick up an injury. Not from rugby though, yesterday I woke with an extremely tight next/shoulder. It feels like it might have strained a rear delt or my trap.
The joke being I didn't even do any weights the evening before, just ran. So my take from that is don't do cardio you get injured lol.

I use Total War by Recon1. I've tried over 20 pre gyms and this is the only one that works for me.

I tend to just use the odd caffeine pill as I don't drink coffee, I do have some basically semi legal crack in a tub for the odd big weekend session.

When I was a teenager my friends were all talking up how good jack3d was, turned out it had banned substance in it (I think Speed) :p
It contained DMAA which later became banned, it was in a legalish grey area IIRC when it was around but yes it's effectively an amphetamine with a slight chemical tweak to get around the law.

Are you using chalk when you lift? Or do you wear gloves or anything like that?

i dont use chalk or gloves as chalk is banned and i was told to not use gloves to get caluses for better grip. but at the moment it is just painful blisters not hard skin as people said should come.

The blisters will go in time - the skin will harden. However, they're not completely unavoidable.

Is liquid chalk banned as well? A lot of gyms allow liquid chalk if they don't allow the use of proper chalk.

PLEASE DO NOT USE GLOVES!:mad::mad::mad::p

Going to have to try and make the bar sit in your hand where there's a bit less immediate pressure, although that's hard doing certain things.
One of those new comer things you just have to poor through unfortunately

all good ill get through it. been going since end of January and feeling very good. Benched 50kg yesterday very happy with myself. Thought id get blisters/caluses a bit later on though. is it true if you grip harder theres less friction so less blisters?
