The 328i - A bit of a project

Nothing done to the car since last update, but I thought I'd post these files here...

I love the engine noise at high RPM...shame my gear change sucks...

http://www.finaldecap.co.uk/ocuk/VRM.mp3

and a video of parts of my drive...no engine music :p...because I forgot to set the mic up.
I've included the fun twisties, but following a slow estate and a suicidal smart car so doesn't look fun, and some of the higher speed bits too, it's all in real time as well. :)

I picked the music on purpose. :p

The reason there are stops in the video is because the laptop was being a retard.

Now to use a webcam for this is tricky as when it's sunny the cameras just fill with glare, which obviously is not ideal (and is why there is the sound clip rather than a video). All is not lost though, to combat this problem I had a good think, and had a suggestion from L0rdMike which I decided to use...

1x pair Tesco UV glasses...remove lens...

Get webcam, glasses and bluetac together...

And that worked for the video I posted. :D

Oh, and I picked up an 18 button OBC and OBC stalk today so when I have a few more bits I can retrofit it to the car. :)

You genius - I have massive glare issues with my bullet cam :D. Will give that a go.

BTW - have you got front bumper ducts for the brakes? You can get ducts which run from the front bumper to the front wheel arch (there is a hole in the front wheel arch for this).

I have the hole in the bumper, but not ducting to the brakes. Haven't had fade yet, but I don't drive all that hard. :p

Those ones cost me £2 from the clothing section. :D

The ones I wear driving cost me £10 and do a similar job/slightly better job. I meant to get the £5 ones from Tesco as they deff do UV reduction, whereas the £2 ones don't do it I don't think, but they do reduce it enough. :)

Ok, again no car updates as such, but was messing about with the camera earlier...

I trimmed the lens down...

...this should fit on the camera well now...

...attached with electrical tape.

The idea of this is that I can mount it wherever I like in the car and not worry about camera glare...so, onto mounting it...

This is what the front end should look like...

...1 min later...

...and insert the camera...

...then secure it.

Ok, camera sorted, sound now. Get the mic, find a decent place to put it...

...run all the cables as much out of the way as possible without working out where in the bulkhead there could be a possible hole to use...

Ok, so the cable route is not ideal as it'll mess with the seals, but at the moment I'm just testing this set up out and if I like it I'll see about routing cables through the bulkhead (which could be a right pain).

And a video...

It would seem that whilst it works I need to get a better pair of cheap sunglasses, with decent UV protection really. Still, this has been an interesting thing to run and proves that you don't need to spend loads of camera setups (although in fairness I would spend money on a decent camera and setup if I could). :)

Also I'm not sure if it's the software I'm using (Capture!) or the laptop I'm using, but often the video freezes for a couple of seconds, which results in the audio being out of sync and a frustrating watch too...still all I've spent on this is £2 for the sunglasses and £5 for the mic both of which I hacked apart. :D

That mic doesnt do the engine justice!

After selling ym 328i sport two weeks ago I miss it!:(

Good setup though and if you could leave it running all the time it would help if any crashes into the front of your car!

As it's plugged into a laptop that I put on the passenger set, I can't run it all the time. :p

It's more the encoding that doesn't do it justice. If I run the original file on my PC it's ok (although the engine maxes out the mic), but the YouTube compression kills it. :(

He has a good mic, mine cost £5. :p

I did try with it by the exhaust a while ago (in the boot :p) but it got similar results to being in the engine bay.

I have a Canon Ixus that takes fantastic videos, and a suction mount thing. I'm far too much of a pussy to mount it externally on the car, though :D

Nice results Inv, I'm very impressed with the web cam / glasses hacking! :D

The sound certainly does not do the M52 justice - have you got the oem BMW exhaust on it still? it seems to not get as loud as the revs rise as I'd imagine (something to do with some flap opening in the back box above a certain rpm point iirc)

Anyway, glad your still having fun with her - Mines taken to blowing out its water after motorway runs for some weird reason - town driving its fine.

Stock exhaust although my flap has been jammed open at some point. Normally you remove a rubber hose from it and it'll open and stay open, but mine is attached and open. Tried making it budge the other day by poking it, stuck fast. :/

The mic being in the engine bay by the relay box and strut top means you don't hear the exhaust all that much. May set it up with the mic outside under the car around the exhaust at some point, to get a better sound, problem is then you get wind buffeting (which I managed to get on that video actually due to the angle of the mic).

The car is brilliant though, covered nearly 3k already.

when changing your brakes were you just going along as it came with general knowledge of what you were doing or did you follow something like they Haynes Guides?

i've got a E36 316i Compact and need to change mine my brakes but i know there isn't a haynes guide for that model.

only asking really as if you managed to do it as it came then i'm sure i could give it a go with a mate or my dad.
