The 328i - A bit of a project

LOL - that is exactly how my A-pillar looks :p. Worked out a good way of getting through the bulkhead yet?
It's not difficult. There is a hole used for the +ve battery lead on the 6-pots that passes into the footwells.

Yours should still have the hole even though its a 318, my mates ti did.

These shoddy BMWs just fall to pieces...I mean I parked mine in the garage earlier and now look at it!

That's right ladies and gents, the 328i is being stripped down and sold as parts. :( Still, means money in for another toy of some sort. :D

Nick - I'll take a wing off tomorrow (well try to), document my progress and come back with a write up of how to/how not to take the wings off. :)

Iirc, "Performance BMW" magazine has a feature in this months edition showing exactly how to remove the wings on an e36. :)

Ooh cool - what condition are the brakes (discs/pads/callipers) on it? Also, what condition are the rear shocks/springs?

Brakes, were replaced when I got it and have done ~4000-5000 miles on them since March. The pads are Performance Friction Z rated pads...stop well when cold, even better when hot and never had fade...but then I've heard 328i only get fade with these pads don't fade unless being pushed majorly on track, even then, minimal fade. :) Discs are OEM vented. Calipers are fine as far as I'm aware.

Springs/shocks...honestly I don't know, I don't think they are in great condition though...think they are original...and at 175k they've taken a beating.

Gah...well I'll do it anyway! :p

What have I missed, something broke?

The engine and my wallet...read up. ;)

He blew it up by ignoring his temp guage and carrying on driving :(

That's one way of putting it. :p Although I did try to fix the thing, at a large cost, then it went and broke again, even more so.

Wing removal is extremely easy (so long as bolts aren't rusted and rounded).

Have a write up...

I removed the bonnet yesterday because I'm taking the car completely to pieces, this gives me a lot more access that I need for wing removal too as the hinge may well sit over the lip of the wing...I can't remember fully though having removed the hinges.

On the top of the wing you have four star drive screws which are slightly stubborn but only due to the fact that they have paint over them.

Easy enough to remove though...

Next (working clockwise round the passengerside arch that is) you have 2 10mm bolts behind the door hinges...

The lower one is easy to remove as nothing obstructs it, but the upper one has the hinge assembly in the way if the door is at the wrong angle. Open the door about 1/4 of the way and you can get a 10mm socket with extension bar in there easily enough...

Next you have two bolts on the sill between the wheel arch and the door, again 10mm. These may well be covered in paint and underseal in which case you'll have to remove it (I used a screwdriver :p) from the bolt head and the washer too. Once cleaned up they just come undone easily.

You'll likely have to remove the wheel arch liner to get to the final bolt, which requires 5/16 I think it was socket on quite a few screws front and rear of the wheel, once they are out the liner pulls out...you may be able to get away with removing the front bolts and pulling the liner out of the way...I don't know...I was removing the whole front of the car so it went. :p

Once you have access to the front bolt this one is 5/16 or whatever it was...same as the arch liner ones anyway.

Mine was slightly rounded and rusted solid, I had to drill out the screw and snap it off else it wasn't going to let me remove the wing.

Very simple and quite painless to be honest, so much better than Peugeot 205 wings...which are bolted on along the top and then bonded on around the arch etc. area meaning they buckle when removing them.

And a shot of the car as I'm leaving it for the night...

My wings are actually in a decent condition so I'm going to pull the driver's side off tomorrow (wasn't planning on removing them for sale) and see if I can get a couple of ££ for them (along with all the other bits I'm removing). :)

Ok so I've been stripping the car down as you all know, and now, what is probably the final photos I'll be taking of the car...certainly last ones of it on wheels...

When it's not weeing it down outside I'll drag the car out to the front of the house, put it on blocks and remove wheels and brakes ready to sell them and will then call a scrappy to come collect the shell. :)

A 5/16 socket? No wonder you rounded the bolt off if you were using imperial sized sockets on a modern BMW. ;)

Metric wouldn't fit, too big and too small. ;)

Only when coupled with a bigger throttle body.

Not to mention ideally a remap too.

Are you breaking it then? (*looking for bits*).

Email/msn in trust. ;)

And by "star bits" you mean Torx? ;)

That would indeed be the one...always forget the name. :)
