The 500 year old question

Off course yes, why would anyone say no.

To those saying I don't want to see x y and z die.. well there will be many more new people you can meet and will have all the time in the world to do so.

I think as people grow up they eventually notice they move from the generation of the moment to gradually taking a backseat to next generations.

Everyone you know will have died. You'll constantly be having to make new friends. Eventually you'll struggle to relate to the people around you, as they struggle to relate to you.

Your era will have gone so far it's out of living memory.

People today already get lonely because after your 20s it's very difficult to meet new friends.

I'd rather die with the people I know around me, or people I meant something to.

It's considered that a human generation is 25 years, so you'd see 20 generations in your 500 year life time.

Best to move around a lot or you might find yourself banging your great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great grand daughter :D.

So If I can choose to be younger then I wouldn't have the capital to not have to work and I hated working.
If I have to be my current age, there is way too much physical damage to want to live that long.

The only upside to a much longer life is that I would have time to sort out my golf game.

My answer would be no.

Edging towards yes, I know I’d probably start trying to test the immortality, I mean, if I jumped off a 100ft building could break anything and die. The thought of loved ones dying isn’t nice.

I‘m late 50s now, a few aches and pains creeping in, if I were in my 30s the answer would be a definite yes.

Yes you have a chance to try different paths retrain.
If you have children Nd they have children etc. family get-together could be rather large.

As the only one? Nah I don't think so.

I'd probs spend 200 years trying to make sure I'm financially secure for the next 300 (probs bet it all on red and have to start again) I think by year 500 I'd be living on an island in a cave or something. Humanity keeps trying to destroy it's self so who knows what type of ****hole the world will be in 500 years.

You would also have to change friends more often, everybody will be ageing while you don't.
People saying you can get married again so you watch your wife turn into a GILF or GGILF and watch your own kids turn into your parents, no thanks.

Sounds awful. I cant imagine how dreadful it would be to see your kids dying, and their kids dying
You may come to see other people as disposable and that would dehumanise you
Other people would know this and avoid you
You'd be an oddball as your attitudes to everything would be out of sync with everyone else
There's a arc to life, where it's rapid growth at the start and that acceleration gradually wanes - 420 years of decline? Eurgh. I'm having trouble enough in my late 50's
Imagine being really thick, or in poverty, or being exploited, or being born in N Korea or Russia, or being an alcoholic, or an addict
I'll let this opportunity pass

It would be very isolating as it would stop you from relating to anyone else.

Playing video games with ‘cheat mode(s)’ is fun for a bit but generally tends to dull the experience. It’s overcoming the struggle that’s the reward.

500 is too long, that would turn into a nightmare.

living abnormally long time like 100+ in good health would be nice though. Im not sure i will ever see much past 65 due to not looking after myself in younger years.

Not unless I had the physical capabilities/health of someone in his 20s/30s for the vast majority of those 500 years, plus enough money to not need to work.

People around you are just connections and dynamic. Your friendships will always change with your short life span. Think of the inventions in the future the ability to travel into space.

You. Said "Your era will have gone so far it's out of living memory." Not true, your era will be dynamic as it is now.

Giving all that up just to die early, s@@# that.
If I was told 1000 years I take it.
I'm not sure how old you are. But can you relate to a 12 to 16 year old kid?

Edit: already answered that you can commit suicide if you want.

Yes, i absolutely would take the 500 years then. Why wouldn't you (unless you are really old already and would be stuck that way for 500 years, that would be rubbish).

It sounds great actually, you get to try out multiple different life paths, partners, friends etc. Loads of time to try different artistic pursuits etc etc.

and if it proves too long you can just jump off a cliff.

i think it is probably only worth it if you are between 18-50 (if you are being strict about staying the same age you are currently)

This, and after 100 years or so you'd have enough money/assets to take the other 400 pretty chill and only need to make enough to eat and pay immediate bills.

Why are some thinking they will become rich?

If you're not rich now, or becoming rich, the chances are you won't be rich. When people reach a certain part of their life they become a consumer rather than creator.

It's not like you have future knowledge.

You might get paid for a gig in a library telling stories of what it was like in your day.

Two words, compound interest.

Wait long enough and you'll be able to afford a meal at the restaurant at the end of the universe ;)

To watch a great film where a lot of the topics of this question get discussed then I recommend The Man From Earth

e: god my spelling is awful today!
