In the hunt for a game that will play fine on my temporary X300SE, I have discovered Galactic Civilizations II which runs perfectly at max settings in my native resolution of 1440x900. Amazing game too, it reminds me of the Stars! sequel (Supernova Genesis) that was sadly never realised due to having no publisher. I'm very impressed.
Some pics; I am obsessed with Norse culture, so my species is naturally called The Aesir and all their planets and ships are named after places and warriors in Norse mythology.
The first pic shows my homeworld Asgard and oldest colony named Midgard, the second pic is of my three freshest colonies named Alfheim (land of the elves), Neflheim (the land of ice), and Helheim (the underworld.) I'm about to colonise another planet which will be named after Jotunheim, land of the giants.
I'm currently focusing on expansion and planetary defense, I currently have no military to speak of. It's a head-to-head vs. the Terran Alliance on a very small map so it should get pretty hot pretty quickly.
I will crush them.

The B-52 were armed with long range AGM-86 missiles, and I was amazed to see the Admiral Kuznetsov engaging them with its SAM systems and guns!
Eventually, after decimating the attacking B-52s and taking out half the AG missiles, the weight of numbers paid off.
Was very impressive to watch
