I think then it'd definately a good step for the competition, if one or two decent ones come out and get a lot of advertising they could make an impact. Not so good for Apple if that happens.

If they don't charge it straight away they'll at least do a "funds check" (or whatever it's properly called) to make you sure have enough in your bank/on your credit card.

Can they actually do that, never heard of it before? And what would the point be anyway, just because you have money in the bank on day x doesn't mean it will be there on day y, and vice versa.

What about customs charges?
 
The additional delay is just going to give me more time to talk myself out of getting one. It's just about killed the anticipation for me.

I'm quite surprised at the prices people are willing to pay just to get it a few weeks earlier than everyone else though. It will be old news a few days after the UK launch anyway - it just seems like throwing money away. The price of being a gadget lover I guess.
