*** The all new Apple iPad thread - Keep all iPad stuff in here ***

I actually gave it a video test using my MiFi connection earlier, was getting 1Mbs dl speeds. The video in full screen was a bit laggy but still top quality. No pony buying though if you would never use it in any way

Arent they both VNC software?
Could you please explain? Cheers oli.
Correct, on a bus to college right now but I'll try to explain as best as I can.

Teamviewer
*It shows you your whole screen obviously but it will show you it as the monitors resolution. So for e.g. My 1920 1080 monitor is a higher resolution then the ipads. So team viewer allows you to zoom in and move around the screen. Or zoom out massively, see the whole screen but it will be tiny

SplashTop
You will always see the whole screen on the iPad. It changes your monitors resolution presumably and you end up seeing everything (like when I was watching family guy)
It fits perfectly, while team viewer makes you do a lot of moving and zooming to find the part of the screen you want. As your trying to view a 1080p monitor on a device which has a lot lower res.

Splashtop therefore doesn't let you zoom in or change to another monitor like team viewer does but this is expected to change in a upcoming update.

Because the difference in how you see things selecting things is different (can't explain, you would have to try for yourself)

I prefer splash top, especially as it sends audio signal and video is good quality.

As far ad I'm aware splashtop has a free version, not sure what the difference is.

_______
written of course from my iPad!

Depends on connection.

Tested again with my MiFi at college and there were some delays sometimes
Couldn't get the smooth video, though audio was fine

My biggest problems with splashtop is that so far there's no multimonitor support and as you can't zoom in some things it would be useful to have a stylus with

oli mate, just tried Splashtop. My gosh how smooth the video streaming is! And I can play Guild Wars on my iPad! Uncanny!

But I wanted to ask, if I wanted to use this through the internet would it be possible? I have a 50mb VM connection.

Why is it ST is able to stream video smoother than say VNC or Teamviewer?

"through the Internet". Meanin when your not at home or what? (on st site there is a guide of how to use it outside of your home network, just adding a few ports and your ip address would be the IP to connect to on iPad

No idea why ita so smooth compared to like teamviewer. But would need a decent connection to use the video outside of house. My MiFi might of only lagged the video because it was 720p stuff, I'll have a look with standard quality stuff later.

Splashtop works off your local wireless network, so WIFI for that matter. Meaning you're stuffed when you're say at work because all you have is 3G available to you, because it won't be able to see your local network. Splashtop is a simplistic remote desktop client for the most part.

I'd suspect that VNC differ in that it also can use the internet to remotely connect to your PC so whilst at work on your 3G connection, you can control your home PC.

Or are you saying though even with a 3G iPad it wouldn't work as you need to be connected through WiFi like I do with hue mifi?

On a slightly differernt subject...

For some reason my iPad has suddenly stopped being able to receive emails. I just get a message saying that it was "unable to contact the server mail.btinternet.com". This worked up until recently for about the last 5 or 6 weeks.

I have looked again and again at the incoming server configuration and re-entered the server name, username, password but it just won't get the mail.

I haven't tried deleting the account and starting again but I might give this a go.

I can still send emails.

All other devices I own can happily receive emails on this account.

The only thing that has happened recently is that I used my iPad abroad on a friends WiFi connection (where it worked perfectly) but as soon as I returned home and connected to my own WiFi it will no longer receive. This may be a complete coincidence but it's the only thing that has happened.

Any ideas ???

Ahh I stand corrected then. I'll try this out when I get home today as from what I could see, the app was limited to your local network and couldn't connect via the internet but that page seems to suggest you can.

Edit: No luck. The app works fine via Wifi only so it's useless away from home when I switch to 3G. I setup splashtop with my external computer ip and forwarded the relavent ports and tried to connect. My PC displayed the 'Darren's iPad is now controlling this computer' dialogue box upon connecting but the iPad just showed a blank screen after that.

Possibly ... Try later

I was just typing out a message on mine on the forum and then so quickly everything selected and as I'm typing I clicked a letter and everything was of course gone. Isn't there like a undo thing at all? Or if so is it only in things like pages?

Shake the iPad? (undo is like that on the iPhone I thnk).

Bugger, put the ipad in my bag this morning as I wanted to read t3 at lunch, was in a rush and didn't put it in the case. How bad could it be? I though, very is the answer! Nasty Black scratches on the back now :(
