*** The all new Apple iPad thread - Keep all iPad stuff in here ***

My iPad charges when directly connected to my Mac Pro's front USB port. But when I boot into Windows 7, it says 'not charging'. So that's a bit weird.

Anyway I paid £564 for the 32GB Wi-Fi version using a company that purchases stuff in the US and then sends it, including FedEx Priority shipping and handling costs. Might receive a bill for VAT charges, if it was checked by customs.

Yer... mad price.
Im still thinking of it as the big iPhone. £500 or whatever it is for the none 3g one, to:
*Watch movies on the move (which is very rarely)
*Browse the net while im sitting on the sofa at home (currently do that with my iTouch)
*Games i guess as well,

thats all i can think of. I have 3G on my phone and it takes to long anyway to even think of buying that version.

for that sort of price i could buy things which i would benefit a lot more from or use a lot more.
Hell my gaming pc cost £600..

So won't be purcashing a iPad unless someone gives me a heep of money :(

Indeed I have arrived at the same conclusion. Im afraid. I was set all for getting one.

Dont get me wrong I LOVE this product, but not at this price, it is just too expensive and quite frankly more expensive than a netbook and more limited than one.

It is flash, it is snazzy and just oozes class, but I mean... just too expensive :(

You don't need to use the iPad charger at all.

I have about four ordinary Apple USB chargers kicking around, they all charge it perfectly and so does the USB port on my Mac. The only kicker is that when it's plugged into the Mac it says "not charging" when the screen display is on so it only actually charges when it's not being used.

I plugged mine into my Mac Pro when it was down at 20% and went to bed. The following morning it was fully charged.

They do charge it, but it's very slow. The iPad charger is a 10W supply - not sure what the iPhone/iPod chargers are, but I noticed it took a very long time to charge on my MBP (think the max it can kick out is 6W).

Im unsure now tbh.
With the $899 conversion, it worked out at £550 for the 64Gb 3g model.
Which was alright.
But now its £700, and from the look of Oranges micro-sim contacts, rubbish rates on that too.

Im hoping we see something better from the other providers.

i like the idea of having the 3g just if I am taking it anywhere, but I dont relish teh idea of having a contract and paying another bill :(

what to do what to do, 2 days to decide

Yes it's more expensive than a netbook, and a half decent laptop for that matter, but we should all know where Apple products are concerned that point is irrelevant.

You want Apple you pay a premium.

I am going to get the 32gb version for £499. If you take the US price of $599 and convert it via http://www.xe.com/ucc/ you get a non taxed price of £404.73 (£1 = $1.48). You add 17.5% VAT to that price and you have £475.56 which isn't that far behind the price I am going to pay.

Expensive? Yes, but that's the price we pay for wanting an Apple product.

Theirs paying a premium, then theirs paying over what everyone else if paying for the same "premium"

You know this is a great toy to have, but I have to take a step back here for a second.

You're looking at probably spending £600 on the WiFi+3G version not including extras like the wallet and perhaps the stand. Call it a +£700

That is actually pretty steep... :(

(Dont get me wrong folks I would love one of these, but... £700 ... eek.
I may as well add a two tons and go for a macbook air or something :|

u could get a white macbook for that nearly, its ridiculously expensive, I can see apple pricing themselves out of the tablet market !

US I Pad

At the moment the only drawback is that the UK app store isn't fully supported - You can't get to the app store on the device itself if you're using a UK iTunes account although you can download apps on your Mac/PC and sync them to the iPad.

That and the fact that the charger comes with a USA plug.

That's it, apart from that there are no drawbacks at all. Once it's officially released in the UK the first one I mentioned will be a non-issue.

I spoke to Apple today and they told me the warranties are region based so I would hold out.

Hmmm....

This still seems to be confusing :(. As far as I know the iPhones are only warranty'd in the country of origin whereas MacBooks (/Pros) are covered worldwide.

Anyone got anything concrete either way?

I still haven't seen anything official from Apple confirming it about the iPads.... But logic would make me think that they're closer to the iPhone than they are to a MacBook....
