Eset Smart Security has so far beaten every other vendor there is, they have not missed an "in the wild virus" to date for the 7-10 or so.

"in the wild" means that the virus has not been picked up yet and specific definitions written for it. Due to Esets advanced scanning methods they have not missed one yet.

Just my pennies worth ;)

That might be what the marketing material says, but it's a far cry from real life experience. For example, this PC was running a legit, fully updated and fully secured (a la Blackspear's settings) NOD32 install. Yet lo:

Never missed a virus, my arse. :p

Am I mad ?
Thought I would give Norton internet security 2011 a go.
I know I know it's Norton, I hated their earlier products, but I am quite surprised. There is no system slow down it runs like a dream and it also picked up two trojans that Eset smart security missed.
Runs for the hills.

I use Avira free, and have been happy with it for a a few years now but i've got a free offer from Kaspersky from barclays. I don't know what to do. Last thing i want is to be interrupted mid game with loads of messages or alerts which other AV might do.

No you're not mad, seen recent reviews of all the latest AV's and Norton comes out top. I use ESET but might go back to Norton when my subscription runs out in June. In fact my brothers new laptop has 2011 and it really works well. Norton seemed to have done it right this time. Well that's my two cents.

I just got myself Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes, is that okay for protection, or should I get myself a firewall i.e. Comodo?

Tried Bitdefender, Avg, norton 360, nod32 and a few others, all seemed to interfere with gaming. Avast so far in gaming mode has proved to be the best for me. Am onto trying Microsoft security essentials just now though but if that doesn't work out I will go back to avast 6.
