I'm using Kaspersky 2010 atm however my license expires in 6 days and I will be 'upgrading' to Microsoft Security Essentials. So my vote goes to Microsoft Security Essentials :).

I just tried out kaspersky on my NC10 for the first time and had to ditch it, The threat sense scan thing seemed to be never ending and slowed the system to a crawl,
Im now on MSE and seems much better, May be that kaspersky isnt suited to limited resources on netbooks?

Where's all the old content??? I had posted a couple references to sites are they now gone?

If so anyone got a good on-line virus scanner link please

I've been meaning to look through the old thread, I will dig through it and get the content posted in this thread. Haven't had much spare time the past few weeks :)

Interested in knowing if any of the paid for anti-virus and firewall packages keep on working once subs have expired, e.g. firewall can still be used, but doesn't receive further updates.

I know Norton is disabled when subscription expires.

avast! Internet Security?
Kaspersky Internet Security?

I really can not make my mind up.
Eset security suite 4 or Kaspersky internet suite 2010.
I have licences for both, after looking at lots of reviews I'm confused.
I like nod32 but is it as good as kaspersky ?
Anyone gone from nod32 to kaspersky or vice versa ??

Im going to buy a new laptop soon and was wondering which av/security software to use.

Its between Avast v5 and comodo

Or

KIS 2010.

How do they compare resource hogging wise? Ive heard KIS can use lot of memory. But id most likely get an i3 or a t4300 processor with 4gb of ram so would it be an issue?

KIS is the obvious winner in most other categories but im a pretty wise computer user. Id had my account in standard mode, with uac enabled, i have a router with a firewall. Maybe sandboxie if its necessary.

I wouldnt recommend anyone to use MSE it just let through a ton load of trojans and rootkits.

Specifically:

winesm32
Hilot.trojan
Daurso.trojan

Plus a few more I cant remember that was just from visiting one stupid linked site on a forum.

It identified some but then it couldnt remove them, and went crazy. The only thing that appears to have worked is MalwareBytes and my now replacement Avast has recently spotted a rootkit.

MSE and adaware.

AVG I found reasonably good but prefer Avast. Haven't tried Avira but did briefly use Nod32 so can't really comment on that. Spybot is pretty good, has been quite useful in the past. I did, years ago, pay for a year's subscription to Spyware Doctor and I must say I found it very good. Wouldn't pay for any software again if I can avoid it though. :)

I fear the answer to this will not be as simple as I want it to be. I think I'm returning to the world of Microsoft for a while to try out windows 7, and would like to use an antivirus program. It'll be behind a hardware firewall but used fairly often by people who are proving difficult to educate against clicking the pretty banners. Don't really mind about system resources used, the slowest system it would be on is an e8400 with 4gb of ram.

I remember Kaspersky being highly regarded so will go for that if no one has other suggestions.

Advice much appreciated.
