Well after reading on here that Kapersky (KIS) was free for Barclay's customers, I just registered and tried to install it... only to find out it's a bundled firewall too!!

I swear by Zone Alarm so there's no way I'm giving that up. It wouldn't even provide an option for just an Anti-Virus instillation.

I'll try installing KAV and see if the activation code works....

EDIT: Nope. Neither KAV or KIS work with Zone Alarm, I didn't even get to install it.

Anyone recommend a firewall that provides pop ups for every operation which works with KIS or KAV?

Avast antivirus replacement?

Hi guys,

Ive used avast antivirus for over 6 years now and its been great, until this new version 5 came out last year that is just too intrusive.

If I deactivate automatic updates the taskbar icon changes to one with an alert icon and looks FUGLY. Even if I set it to "tell me when there is an update" it still does it.

I basically have to do what they want or it does what it wants.

Another example, when I first boot the PC and windows is starting I dont want it to check for an update whilst all the processes are loading as then everything takes double the time. Also sometimes Ive booted after a crash and I want to quickly get back into a game or get back to what Im doing but instead I have to wait for the it to update. And when it does update, it brings everything else to a crawl.

But there is no option to set to make it NOT update at every boot. There is an option to delay the antivirus starting until after system processes but this doesnt work, it still loads way before even my ATI drivers have loaded.

Is there another antivirus that I can use and ditch this avast for good?

I want an antivirus that picks up potential harmful files that get through my already extensive netting of just common sense. I dont download dodgy files and I scan things manually just out of caution. I dont need an antivirus that brings my pc to a crawl just to protect me! I also use my PC for gaming so I want he antivirus to basically shut off when I am gaming, I dont want it to do anything!

Any ideas?

For your first problem just untick what you don't want to be alerted about under settings

For your second problem I can't say I've seen the same myself, it boots nice and fast.

To stop the change of system tray icon remove tick form the following option (this is using Internet Security trial version, so not sure if Free is the same)

Settings > Status Bar > Definitions Auto Update

Then when put engine and program update to manual only you don't get a yellow alert.

Edit: That screenshot wasn't there when I typed this :)

Ah thanks so thats the first one sorted.

Broken Hope, I see you only have file system shield installed and none of the mail, web, network shields.

Is this better?

I have the mail and web shields running as well, should I turn them off?

The mail and web shields will scan before files actually hit your hard drive but can potentially slow down your internet connection, the file shield will scan on file creation and catch a virus that is downloaded anyway so I don't personally see the need for the web or mail shields on my system.

don't know why you have those problems, runs just like it did before upgrading to v5 for me, quick boots etc. all i've done is turn on "silent/gaming mode"
