I was using AVG2014 and found it quite obtrusive. My laptop is a slow B980 @2.4GHz and 2GB RAM.

I went to bitdefender, and it was a pain. It maxed out my RAM, and was always doing something. It also maxed out my hard disk transfer rate, making my pc VERY slow (unusable) for a lengthy time (1 hour). Unistalled it. I might try Avast now.

Also, I am using Win 8.1 64-bit, and I always have a process called 'System' eating up my HDD transfer rate. It can go up to 12MB/S at times too!

I have been noticing it since I removed AVG. Anyone know what it is?

Try AVG uninstaller http://www.avg.com/gb-en/utilities ,it makes sure all AVG files are gone,as to System you should have that listed but yours seems high on usage mine is using memory 0.1MB, HD usage is 0 to 0.1MB on mine its PID 4 and listed as NT kernel and System.

I've been running Windows Defender with Malwarebytes and Spybot on Windows 8 for quite a while as my security suite. I've not really been following the antivirus/malware game for a while so I'm curious, is this still an effective combination or are there superior software now?

I recently purchased a new MB and it comes with free Kaspersky, I used to use it a while ago and felt it missed a few things now and then so I switched to NOD32 and have used that ever since, I was tempted to go back to Kaspersky and giving it another go seeing as I was getting it for free but notice here it scores pretty low, is it really that bad now? should I stick to NOD32?

Kaspersky and NOD32 are both very good so stick with what you are happy with, Kaspersky uses less resources however then NOD32.

A lot of users are happy witth Defender(Win8 AV) and Malwarebytes as backup.

There are better free AVs(according to AV tests) then Defender ie Avast which is what I use with Win8 and Malwarebytes free version as well, preference thing for a lot of users however.

so what free anti-virus are all that run windows xp going to be using on there now that Microsoft Security Essentials - Free is not officially supported on win xp?

A friend of mine who was getting all kind of viruses and malwares over the years (or fished for them :p) because of his browsing habit and also downloaded some dodgy software.

He used AVG Free and then moved to Norton Internet Security but he was still getting viruses so he switched over to Kaspersky Internet Security which he has now been using for few years now, did not have a virus problem since then, apart from minor malwares which can be cleaned up easily with Anti-Malware Bytes.

So Kaspersky is highly recommended.

Avast is good

BitDefender is better?

Don't think I've seen a resident AV so lightweight and unobtrusive as this ever. It just works and is ideal for novice users as well as seasoned power users.

Also the poll needs to be wiped clean, it's invalid now.
