UAC stands for User Account Control. It's probably on the default setting, which is fine, unless you've tinkered with it.

C:\Windows\System32\UserAccountControlSettings.exe

Recommended is optional. I have it enabled. You should enable 'Give me updates for other Microsoft products when I update Windows'.

I did use Avast! free which was very good. However, due to my recent build and wanting piece of mind, I opted to buy Nod 32 Smart Security with an awesome price!

Me, my mate and his brother agreed to using a partner website to Nod32 which gives adition % off but we also managed to get these for Student price :p apparently they no longer check your ID, so you just need to say where you study.

In total we managed to get Smart Security, 3 Users on a 3 Year Licence and we just had to pay little compared to how much it would have cost us each on a normal purchase. :D

Switched recently from Avast Free to BitDefender, mainly as I fancied a change and Avast while still good seems to nag quite often with popups. So far I'm very pleased with it, easy to use and quiet, just the way I like it.

I was using avast free and I had no issues with it other than the browser seemed slightly sluggish.

Now I'm using kaspersy free with a Barclays account, system is more responsive and no annoying adds popping up, slicker UI.

best free anti virus? pls help

Hi,
my copy of AVG anti virus is running out very soon. Never had a problems with AVG, but no very sure if I want to renew it.

Can anyone pls recommend a good free anti virus?

My fav at the moment is Qihu 360 Total Security. Its free and doesnt seem to have any limitations. Its scores pretty well in tests and uses Avira and BitDefender protection as part of its bundle (I think its the cloud part). Also doesn't seem to have slowed my system down.

Only thing people are dubious of is that its a Chinese company. I have found it to be the best free AV for some time, and no nag screens. Does have some other speedup features that also seem useful.

I found that other free AV now tend to be ad supported with nag screens/unwanted stuff which negates part of the reason to have them in the first place IMO.

Your bank or ISP will often provide an antivirus license.

g2a do deals on antivirus. I got nod32 for like 3 quid.

I go with these options. You can also 'trial' some good brands and if you are patient, time them to cover most of the year - you will have also got an idea which was your preferred.

Then do what Scotty did and get one license on the cheap.

I got a three user license of Norton for £13. I checked a lot of alternatives for a few months trialling them and read into many reviews on the top hitter before buying this license.

Back in the early 2000's I wouldn't have touched them for their resource hogging and intrusiveness, however I have used this version for about three months now on a desktop and laptop and it is actually fine.

Any decent brand for under a tenner is worth it.
