Not a recommendation, more of an observation.

I'll bite so just installed latest version of Bitdefender free to see if they fixed the crashing issues I had with some Origin games ie ME3 over six months ago, well latest version has no issues and seems to be working great ,so I've to give it my recommendation.
Light,no ads and free ,gets the job done, nothing really more you can ask for.
Panda had a recent hiccup I read today..
What crashing problem out of interest? Around this time last year I played through ME3 and had an issue where the game, on startup, would CTD about four or five times before "working" and starting up normally, whereupon it would work fine.
I use BitDefender free - is this the issue you're thinking of?
I had to do a reinstall because of it. Completely broke my windows. Now using Bitdefender.

I was using AVG Free until today. Uninstalled and now using Windows defender built into Win8.1 (MSE)
I would use anything but Defender(MSE),try Bitdefender Free or Panda Cloud, plenty of better free alternatives out there that are light on resources with far superior detection rates.Malwarebytes free version is also nice as a backup for malware scans now and then too.
Yes user is the first line of defence, but you might as well use the best AV programs available to you, especially if some are free.
I think I will try Bitdefender and see how it goes, I started to hate AVG coming up with all the shpeel.

I liked Bit Defender but I kept having a common bug where it would minimize games and the only way to fix it was to log off / on. I now use Qihoo 360 Total Security and have been for several months and absolutely love it, can't fault it in anyway and it uses its own, Avira's and Bit Defenders engines simultaneously.
Best thing is that it's 100% free with no PUP's and no attempt to drain you wallet at any point.
Many of these 'free' products have to make a living. This is the behaviour you have to expect now (or stealth PuP's).
This is why paid AV products exist. Distributing PUPs by using free AV as the delivery method is another nail in the coffin.
