Best free antivirus/malware ?

Looking for a good free antivirus/malware program, I got an email from my ISP about posibly being infected with something called the citadel trojan virus even though I haven't been on any funky sites or downloaded anything odd I just want to be sure.

Any advie is appreciated :)

Hi,

For the Free AV use either

AVAST or Avira

and for anti-malware use MalwareBytes (MBAM) free & Hitman Pro (free for 1 time clean) also run TDSS Killer by Kaspersky.

Doing the right thing - not ignoring it, as their advice/intel would've come from the NCA.

If it were me I'd do a full re-install of the OS on the primary drive, install an ESET NOD32 trial and malwarebytes then run a full scan on the additional drives.

I'm not sure what the best free antivirus is as I use a paid version of ESET NOD32. But Malwarebytes free is definitely worth getting :)

Thanks for the reply peeps, I've gotten Malwarebytes, Avast, Hitman Pro and TDSS Killer and I'm running through them now.

Could just be a false positive, I've contacted virgin media and I'll see what they say :)

Hi,

When running MBAM do it in "Safe Mode with Networking" - also disable System restore, and delete all restore points. When you're happy the unit is clean, re-enable and create a new manual restore point at that time. Malware will reside in a restore point and reinfect the PC at a later date.

Will do thanks :)

Has anyone got any experience with F-Secure ?
Just got offered it for 1 year for free from Virgin Media, Usually costs £79.99 a year.

It's average. Not really worth if it if you'll have to swap it out for something else in 12 months time.

I used to be big fan of bit defender, but it just seems to use a massive amount of system resources. Using built in 8.1 and so far so good
