The "All-Things-Guitar" Thread

Hi,

If you use guitar tablature, the strings that play the highest notes (the top strings) are places at the top.Tux guitar and guitar pro simply reflect guitar tablature. This is the universal way in which it is done as it represents what it looks like to you when you look down at your guitar to play the strings. Guitar pro does exactly the same.

To see the tunings, double click on the track number (the instrument that you are following) and it should bring up information, including string tunings.

Thanks a bunch mate! I read a few "how to read tabs" guides and none of them mentioned they were written as if viewed downwards! I've been doing loads of reading at JustinGuitar and looking at tabs in preparation for when my guitar arrives. I'm really stoked about getting stuck in to it.

You're most welcome!

Here's some other good things to do with tux guitar - you can loop sections of songs by putting in repeating brackets (yes it's terrible I don't know the musical name) around the section. There will be the tools to do this in the top right. First do the open bracket then the closed bracket (which will ask you how many times you want it to repeat - I always go for 99 for some reason). Then click on this section (being careful not to add a note) and press play, the section will loop again and again, allowing you to nail it.

Furthermore, this is useful when, in addition, reducing the tempo of a song. You will find the tempo in beats per minute around the top right. Simply reduce this number to slow the song.

You can use the tuning section that I pointed you to in order to change the tuning of the strings (change the off set setting, +1/-1 will raise or lower the entire guitar by 1 semitone).

You can also use the mixer section (around the top right) to isolate or mute certain tracks. Usually I will mute everything but the drums and the part I am trying to learn.

I hope this helps :)

Nice one, cheers mate. You know you can do the looping and tempo slowdown using "training mode" under the Player options? The hotkey is F9. You can choose which section to loop (start measure and end measure) as well as the speed to play at as a percentage, and you can tell it how much you want the tempo to increase with every iteration of the loop. Never knew that about the mixer though, knew there had to be some place you could mute other instruments.

Still waiting for my guitar to arrive :(. Totally gutted that on Wednesday when it was dispatched I found out I could have gone and bought it for the same price I paid on fleabay at a store 10 minutes away in Epsom :(. I could have been playing it for a week now! And there have been so many holidays now, I could have played loads! I should have searched for a nearby store when I was about to buy it, but I am programmed to look at online stores only.

but I am programmed to look at online stores only.

Because usually they are cheaper.
On Dec 27th my Brother In Law wanted to buy a keyboard for my nephew and had £300 to spend.
I then looked around the net for over a hour looking for a good model and came across a Yamaha for £249 and nowhere could I find it cheaper.
Armed with this info he went up to our local Academy Of Sound and expected it might be £20 more which would be fine for a then & there transaction.
It was £229 in the shop :)

Result! Yeah I buy everything online since it's cheaper/more convenient, but if I had just clicked the "places near me" tab in Google, I would have spotted this awesome guitar shop and been down there in a flash! They also have a luthier there, so I could have organised a proper setup. :(

I will have to hope it will turn up on Tuesday, since they said it would be 2/3 working days. In the meantime I have been reading guitar theory on justinguitar. Some fascinating stuff I never realised before, like the note circle and how it's laid out on every string on the guitar.

Funnily enough I've always wanted a PRS Custom but last night I was talking to a bloke who ran a guitar shop and when the name PRS cropped up he just pulled faces and said he laughed every time he made profit on one.

I know more than one person who's said negative things about PRS.

True they are insanely expensive, but i had a go on a Custom a few years back and fell on love with it. Could not afford the 3 grand price tag though.

He's looking out for you.
I'd be the same but I would also judge how good you were before making the decision.

Yeah I guess you're right, I mean, as I said earlier I've only just started playing properly again, my band has reformed too and we did a gig in our school 2 weeks ago which went very well. I just started lessons again too and I suppose that I have got more than enough equipment for my level of playing, probably too much actually haha. Tokai LP, Fender 60s Stratocaster, Marshall MG100DFX and a load of pedals. Took my Dad 3 years of persuading until I could finally purchase my stratocaster (think I bought it for £450 Second hand which was a bargain!).

On another note, my friend just bought his Dad a guitar for his birthday and he asked me it was any good, he began to explain that he had bought it from a 2nd hand shop (not specifically a music shop) for £70, he then progressed to say, "Uhh what was the name! Oh yeah it was Gibson, definitely Gibson," I then said, "Les Paul?" to which he agreed! £70 for a Les paul!!! I then went to explain to him thats like buying a Porsche for £100, to which he replied, "Oh cool,". IMADBRO.

I Started guitar about 5-6 years ago, played a fair bit for about 9-12 months, learnt a bit from a friend at the time basic songs etc but didnt really learn any chords.

Came back to guitar about a year ago learning basic chords but i still suck, I guess i've learnt wrong. ANy reccomended places to start?

My Dad does indeed know talent, my brother plays guitar and my Dad has started to get lessons last week, I think it took him so much persuading as he never used to see me playing guitar much although when I got my strat I played guitar a lot more and the fact I play genres of music he isn't really into.
