The AMD Driver Thread

The way things are going and have gone these last 6 months with AMD, I'm just about to jump ship I think even with owning a freesync monitor. It all depends on how the 390x is launched and how they go about looking after their customers in that time frame. But, I've just about had enough with the company, its pretty much sunk and doesn't instil me with any confidence any more. I'm currently using the screen without freesync due to crossfire and my cards and its incredible without it....so jumping to Nvidia is no biggie, will just get a couple 980tis and run it at 144fps.

I loved using ATI/AMD cards back when i didn't work and they offered the best price/performance ratio on single cards and i always saw Nvidia as the overpriced option (which they still are but i can afford it these days), Then i bought a 4870x2/5970/2x 6950s and the ammount of issues i had with crossfire and driver issues in general were a joke (also waiting for 5+ months for a driver fix which by that time i stopped playing the game).

Then i moved to Nvidia and never looked back.
AMD lost a willing customer due to terrible software and im scared to ever go back to them and spend my hard earned cash.

^^

You and me both Tony! I am hoping the 980ti's drop the price of the 980 by a decent bit.....

So then:

- is this going to be another "beta" driver or actually a final version or is the driver still not perfect enough for WHQL?
- funny how the driver arrives on the day of witcher 3 release... does this mean, we only get driver updates for big game releases now?

TBH, I bet you we will get a response saying something along the lines of

"sorry but after much testing, we have decided that the driver isn't ready yet and we will have to delay this until we feel that the driver is top quality and nothing but the best for our customers"

Im going to to pick you up on your superficial obsession with WHQL,
It was nvidia WHQL drivers that was killing cards due to stopping fans spinning. WHQL means MS tested so that it does not blatantly interfere with other drivers and basic functions of the OS which it shouldn't and nothing else and even that is lax, its not to ensure there are no bugs or glitches they dont care about that, the gfx card in not there product.

Unless you are using a professional class card which wont accept beta drivers and under some DRM situations you dont need WHQL.

Its understandable that some who are new to PC and PC gaming being apprehensive as Beta in a different field can be a different matter and really problematic but that is not the case here.

I have had about 2 real issues with ATI/AMD since 2005 and both were WHQL and it was the subsequent betas or going back to the previous betas that fixed the issues, i also see plenty of cases where users remove WHQL drivers and do back to the previous beta because the WHQL driver introduced new issues, drivers have to be judged on there own individual merit and not whether they are WHQL as being more important.

If the betas were an issue users would have posted about them already, the drivers have never been better, its just a few missing profiles for recent games and CF Freesync that users are complaining about.

Seeing as the AMD forum is down for maintenance this will have to do as i wanted to post both official latest WHQL driver threads from each site.

Issues with NV latest WHQL driver.

Currently fed up with crossfire support as of late, if i had money i would jump ship but there is no cost effective upgrade path from 2x 280x.

Well, I would still be on 970's if it weren't for the memory thing, and the only real alternative seemed to be the 8gb 290x's. Which would be great but the support is majorly lacking.

980's overpriced, Titan X's waaaay over priced, and the 980 ti's will likely also be overpriced.

Very nearly made up my mind to go back with nvidia, but it will be a while before there is an acceptable alternative from them. Though may just bite the bullet on some 980ti's and lower settings to not hit the 6gb limit when it's necessary...

So I feel your pain.

Is the 3.5gb really an issue? I am yet to hit 3gb at 4k with the vast majority barely scratching 2gb.

What games do you play? At 1440p my settings on GTA sit at about 3.3gb and on BF4 just under 3gb VRAM.

Gta 5 sits at ~2.5gb with very high textures, high shaders, high water etc.

Still getting terrible artifacting in GTA 5 and still none the wiser as to whether its a game or driver issue or if i need to RMA one or both of my 280X's. Getting fed up with this now.

Here a screenshot of mine the other day, very high textures and a mix of medium/high/very high on other settings.

this is with extended shadows maxed but if i turn them off it only drops by ~300mb

Has to be a driver issue. I've not touched GTA V in a week and a bit so I don't know if it's still happening. The issue has popped up in Hardline as well but none of the other ten or so games I've been playing which would rule out a hardware problem and a specific game issue.

I have seen gta 5 use over 3.5GB of VRAM on my pc, mostly max settings except aa, grass and shadows with all the advanced graphics turned off/low (2560x1080)

Some people like to play at 4K but everything set to low or near about just so they can say they play at 4K. Ofc you won't hit vram limits like that.

The Witcher 2 crashes within minutes of running for me. Googling around seems to indicate to (surprise surprise) an AMD driver issue. The readme in the game folder even confirms it! Only way to stop the crashing apparently is to turn off anti-aliasing. :(

EDIT: Still crashing with AA off :(

6) Key Known Issues

Technical

- Playing .avi and other movie files on your system before launching the game may corrupt game graphics (new nVidia drivers will fix this issue). After playing such files, you should restart your computer before launching the game.
-Disable anti-aliasing on AMD video cards before launching the game. This hardware feature currently conflicts with the game’s anti-alias settings.
- Some AMD cards may not allow you to play the game in fullscreen mode.
- After installation, you might encounter an error about a missing .dll file. If this occurs, please run vcredist_x86.exe from the Disk2 directory.
- We advise that you de-activate any anti-virus software prior to beginning the installation process. If you fail to do so, please be sure to authorize the download and installation of any files the software detects as corrupted during installation.
- Occasionally, CPUs may not be detected correctly when using the auto-detect feature in the configuration tool.
- On some system configurations, QTE icons and icons in selected GUI panels may not be visible.

It says make sure AA is off in CCC and use the in game AA and if it still crashing for you then its a different issue.

Does it happen when running one GPU at a time? take one out and test.. It only takes one GPU to have bad Vram to show this kinder glitches... These Glitches also show when you been overclocking to much on the memory..

Can't seem to see any way of actually turning it off. It's already set to use application settings. I did drop back down to stock clocks on both cards and it's still doing it. Also by crashing i mean the whole display completely locks and doesn't respond to anything, sounds still plays merrily in the background though.

Use application settings does mean off in CCC.
Texture Filtering Quality should be High quality, unless you want less quality.
Surface Format Optimization can give issues in some games.

I only have one GPU and it does it. Works fine playing DOTA 2
