The AMD Driver Thread

So assuming I don't go free synch and I buy an AMD Vega GPU what adaptive vsynch options do I have?

I posted this for you in the Vega thread, not sure if you missed it..

RadeonPro

Dynamic Vsync Control (DVC) support. This feature controls how vertical synchronization is applied at rendering time, automatically turning it off when frame rate is below monitor's refresh rate to reduce stuttering and turning it on when framerate is above or equal to monitor's refresh rate, improving smoothness.

He (Mr. John aka japamd) stopped working on this to work on Raptr, not sure what hes up to these days.

I was using this with DayZ Standalone before i bought a FreeSync monitor, worked well too :)

Im actually using this again in DayZ for Borderless Window Mode as i think FreeSync is only working in Full Screen in this title.

DayZ is a bit of a pain in the arse at the moment though, new renderer isnt properly optimised yet and they also have server performance issues.

As someone that has used an Nvidia GPU since 2012 how as your experiences with AMD GPU's been during this time 2012 - 2017?

I've used AMD since November 2012 and not been that impressed with the drivers. My preference would be to go back to Nvidia but they just haven't had a decent value proposition at the times I've been looking to buy. The new control panel is incredibly slow and clunky for example; you click a button and wait 5s+ before it updates, or click again and the app greys out and brings up the "bla bla has stopped responding" dialog. I think it may be something to do with the large number of games I have installed on a mechanical drive and it insists on polling them all for the profile manager or something.

Just because the interface is slow or crashing for you doesn't mean that its happening to all users.
Driver interface is very fast for me and not once had it crash.

Mine loads in well under a second. It is many times faster than nvidia's control panel which I used up until a month ago. Maybe you need a format or something. The new AMD control panel is miles ahead of Nvidia in terms of speed and UI IMO.

I wouldn't claim otherwise, but that's been my experience. I even tried a clean install of the driver.

Regarding load time, the intial load isn't a problem, it loads pretty much straight away. But if I go into Global Wattman and drag a slider it can be really laggy sometimes, the marker doesn't move with the mouse cursor.
Just loaded it up now, clicked on Gaming, then clicked on the X in the corner, app greys out, 10s lag then the Host Application has stopped working comes up. If I click X without first going into Gaming then it closes as you'd expect.

It's possible there could be some conflict with something else in my setup of course but it's been like this ever since they put out the new style Radeon Settings and I don't seem to have these problems with other apps.

Yea. If all this is happening on a mechanical drive then I can understand this happening. Time for an SSD.

@AMDMatt

Are you aware of the 1603 Driver install issue? My GPU has been rendered useless because I cant install any drivers for it, looks like the only fix is to reinstall Windows, surely AMD dont expect people to do this every time they attempt to update their GPU driver, is AMD doing anything about it?

Thanks

Yep we're investigating this one.

Try manually uninstalling Visual C+ 2015 from Add/Remove Programs then DDU then reinstall latest drivers.

I'm glad they have acknowledged it because at the risk of having to experience this issue again I would have had to dismiss an AMD gpu as an option in the future, it is one of the most time consuming and annoying issues I've had to deal with in over 20 years of PC gaming

There must be loads of people with this issue. I've read about C+ causing the issue, also read about Windows 10 and it forcing its preferred driver. I've reset Windows for now which is a massive shame as its going to take me ages to configure it back to where it was and hopefully the GPU driver install will go ok if not I will try your suggestions but next time I go to update it I will be hugely reluctant to do so unless AMD can confirm this specific issue has been identified and resolved.

Thanks

Just game myself a crack around the back of the head -

My MyDocs folder is mapped to a different drive, somehow that drive got disconnected, reconnected and driver installed fine

Still don't get it, doesn't look like it installs anything in there but just seeing that installed successfully message after all the messing makes me happy

Yea. If all this is happening on a mechanical drive then I can understand this happening. Time for an SSD.

I have two SSDs, but they aren't big enough to host that many games. My primary Steam folder is well over 1TB in size and I can't justify forking out hundreds of pounds to replace it with SSD, just to resolve this annoying issue with the display driver software. I don't see why it needs to keep looking up what games I have installed (if that's what it is doing), there should be an option to disable it.

I never have more than a handful of games installed at any given time. Only so many games one can play at a time, and unless one lives in the middle of nowhere, downloading does not take that long. Plus I would much rather my games run from an ssd and make use the rest of the space :)

Just installed Relive, working fine this time around, but one minor problem.
The audio in the recordings is really quiet.
Anyone else had this & if so, did you find a way to boost the audio in Relive?
Tried changing all settings to no avail. :(
