The AMD Driver Thread

Good news.

https://twitter.com/CatalystMaker/status/948227463188017152

"Happy 2018 everyone!! I am seeing some stories pop up about AMD not supporting some old games. That is absolutely not true, we are identifying the bug and working on a fix asap. C&C, Witcher, BfME, etc will be working again."

Just goes to show how someone official on the AMD forums assumed this was a problem caused by "outdated APIs" when in fact it was a bug in the drivers. By responding on that incorrect assumption, it's been blown up into a PR disaster.

Last night I updated my Windows 10 box with the Meltdown patch, which also forced the Fall Creators Update to be installed. I checked and the Meltdown patch is active (no AV issues). Since the update, the graphics card dies and the screen goes black a couple of minutes after login - whatever is running. Sometimes it restarts after 30 seconds or so, but then dies again shortly afterwards. GPU temps were steady at around 40. The machine is still running because I can use keyboard accelerators to cleanly shutdown.

Uninstalling the AMD driver and reverting to the basic Microsoft driver makes the system stable again.

I've tried the WHQL driver that Windows installs (17.7 I think), the latest stable (17.12.2) and the latest alpha (18.1.1). I can't see anything in the Windows logs. Uninstalling the Meltdown patch didn't fix the issue Any ideas as to how I can track the problem down?

OS Microsoft Windows 10 Pro
Version: 10.0.16299 Build 16299
GPU Asus Radeon R9390 DC3 OC Strix 8192MB
Motherboard Asus Sabertooth Z97 Mark 2 Intel Z97 (Socket 1150)
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4690K CPU @ 3.50GHz

Cheers!

Aside from reverting to the basic Microsoft driver, you can also try Safe Mode, from which you should also try a DDU uninstall and then reinstall of graphics drivers after returning to normal. I'd check whether the AMD drivers are applying monitor settings that are somehow out of whack.

I can't offer a solution but just mentioning that I'm running Win10 pro with the bug patch and the 17.11.4 driver with no issues after rolling back from 17.12.2. I'm not sure about the falls creator patch being installed but I presume it must have been automatically installed for me as well. I'm on a Ryzen cpu though so maybe it's cpu related with Haswell.

It's worth looking in on the Microsoft & Intel communities to see if anyone's posting about the same issue there..

Thanks - will do. Beginning to think I'll need to try a full reinstall but that'll have to wait until after I've finished this assignment!

I had a very similar issue and found it was the AMD settings part of the driver causing the issue on my PC. Installing just the driver solved the problem although I now don't have the AMD settings/taskbar icon. I don't game much atm so haven't looked into it any further given it stopped the black screen lockups.

Thanks for the suggestion, but didn’t work for me. Not gaming much myself at the moment, so could have lived with this!

Not sure if I should post this in the vega 56 thread but I got a reply from AMD on my issues. Not impressed. I personally think they need to do a performance pass on the game, and the other bug should just not exist at all. I tried updating my bios to F7 but went back to F6 (Z97X-Gaming 5) because my clock which was previously stable was no longer. Here is the reply:

Response and Service Request History:

Thank you for the response.

I see that you have tried the latest drivers and experiencing the same issue with all the vega compatible drivers.

Please make sure you have updated the motherboard BIOS and all the settings are default.

Also try disabling hardware acceleration in Google Chrome settings and check if the graphic corruption occurs.

Additionally, If possible try the graphic card on a different computer and check the status.

Thank you for contacting AMD.

In order to update this service request, please respond, leaving the service request reference intact.

Best regards,

Just an update, I disabled hardware acceleration in my browsers and I'm not crashing now.

I was crashing in FF with the hardware acceleration on with my 64, just randomly while browsing, like imgur, something with a lot of pics, gifs, id just get a Dark Green screen, requiring a hard restart, but since i disabled the hardware acceleration (couple of weeks ago or so now), its been fine.
