The AMD Radeon R9 285 Thread

Anyone else get bummed out that 95% of graphics card pictures do not show the top/back of the card i.e. the bit you see when installed in a case.

And I am fairly sure that true audio is a built in GPU thing that cannot be added or removed from a card. And it is present on 285.

You'd think there would be a move towards including backplates with modern GPUs (especially at the high end).

Any reason to jack the price usually gets sworn in quickly!

I think a back plate is a must with top end GPU's, a lot of them have some hefty coolers on them, a good back plate helps stop them from sagging under the weight of those coolers..

At 1440P. This card is targeted at 1080P and 2gb is still enough for most things at this resolution. However the option is there for 4gb if the user decides on it.

If these cards are at 'targetted' at any res, it would be 1440 over 1080. since at that conference where they unveiled the 290, they described the 280x as something like 'good for 1440p res'.

Key features of AMD’s third iteration of GCN architecture revealed

Thanks to sources with knowledge of the matter, the key improvements of the third iteration of AMD’s GCN are now more or less clear.

will have a number of important innovations designed to improve performance and efficiency.

One of the key features of the third-generation GCN is updated instruction set architecture (ISA).. improved tessellation/geometry processing performance.. To reduce requirements for memory bandwidth and improve performance in high resolutions, the GCN 1.2 supports delta colour compression..

Club 3D Introduces the Radeon R9 285 royalQueen

Club 3D proudly presents the latest addition to the R9 Series, a card that is built for gaming beyond 1080p and delivers exceptional performance per dollar. The all brand new Radeon R9 285 royalQueen.

The AMD Radeon R9 285 uses the latest iteration of the Graphics Core Next Architecture and gains all the nice features found on the existing R9 290 series as well as the R7 260, supporting natively Eyefinty on the Dual DVI ports + HDMI making it easy for an Eyefinity 3 setup and AMD TrueAudio support.

The Radeon R9 285 is AMD's first discreet GPU with a redesigned fixed-funtion decoder (UVD - Unified Video Decoder) that supports full hardware decode of 4K H.264 videos. This next generation UVD supports H.264 base, main and high profile, up to level 5.2. The primary benefit of having a fixed-function decoder, especially for high bit-rate 4K content, is the significantly reduced CPU utilization. This results in a more responsive system and more importantly, the system will not exhibit any skipped frames during playback.

It also provides superior compute performance across a wide number of applications. With a growing number of applications in the market leveraging OpenCL and GPGPU performance in general, this is becoming even more important to the end user.

Heh, following the more info link from your posted link I see a bunch of chat about 4k... seems a bit of an optimistic claim for a 2GB card!

Edit: 'Up to 2 x UHD displays at 4096x2160' next to 'Ultra Resolution Gaming' ... I really doubt it can drive two 4k screens in games!

Gigabyte Launches its Radeon R9 285 WindForce OC Graphics Card

Gigabyte joined the Radeon R9 285 launch party with a WindForce OC graphics card. The card uses a twin-fan WindForce 2X Triangle-Cool heatsink, which the company implemented on several performance-segment graphics cards, from both camps. The card features a factory-overclock of around 950 MHz, with 5.60 GHz memory. Other Gigabyte-exclusives include gold-plated HDMI and DisplayPort connectors, which totally improve the quality of your digital video content. Or so thinks Gigabyte. Guys

They are live! :)

I think you will find OcUK pricing at launch is far lower than anyone elses, though we do expect our competitors to quickly change their pricing to match ours. OcUK keeping prices low in the channel to benefit our customers. :)

The only issue with this low launch pricing does mean we can't really offer any discounts on the current prices, unless of course exchange rates in coming weeks improve in favour of GBP. Or of course if AMD moves the price, but I doubt that as 270/270X fill the £100-£155 price segment and 285 is £170-£200 segment. :)

Both 280 and 280X are now EOL and will all be gone soon.

new stack is:-
240
250
260X
270
270X
285
290
290X
295 X2

Nice and clean. :)

Not exactly a bargin of the century addition here from AMD but on the whole it's a decent buy for anyone with 1080p screen. I know this has improved thermals and uses less power and has all the latest AMD technologies but somehow I was just expecting a bit more from AMD here.

Gibbo, I was looking at the new 285's on the store and I noticed the Asus card only had a 2 year warranty. My Asus HD5770 had 3 years (one of the reason why I bought it) is 2 years now the standard for Asus graphics cards?
