*** The AMD RDNA 4 Rumour Mill ***

HUB were talking about this one their podcast, it seems to be that MSI have fallen out with AMD rather than tried to get into bed with Nvidia. They're pretty much the only gaming handheld (Claw) using an Intel APU, and they've vastly reduced their AMD chipset motherboards. There were other interesting points too.
That's a shame as I liked there tomahawk series for motherboards. I will probably end up going Asus again for AM5 (I know others hate them but they have been brilliant with my last two strix am4 boards).

That 390mm for the Asus TUF 9070XT must surely be an error? The Asus TUF RTX5090 575watts GPU is only 350mm
The Sapphire RX9070 Pulse appears to be the shortest

Thanks both! Updated the original post (though I think my Asus numbers are still off).

Also added the reference design which seems reasonable!

I'm an unashamed Asus mobo ho :D

If there were two cards, one AMD and the other Nvidia, and they both had identical VRAM and (raw) gaming performance, and were both the same price, which one would you buy?

The answer that you want to hear is "Nvidia" - with those three things equal (VRAM, relative perf, price), but then lots of other things come into play:
  • Fan noise
  • Power consumption
  • Card size
  • Aesthetics / lighting
  • Brand (as @kieran_read said, this matters a lot more in this scenario)
  • Specific performance in games you play most
  • Non-gaming features (I purposely put this at the bottom of the list :p)
Your assertion that "Nvidia is always better for everyone" is too reductionist for this audience, but I do appreciate that's how "average gamer" thinks about it.

Thanks. 305mm length and 2.5 slots is the absolute size limit for my SFF case.

I have a SFF system too,so a shorter card is preferable.

My current motherboard is a B650E-I Strix and the previous one was a B450I Strix. Asus made the cheapest B650E mini-ITX motherboard and the socket is centralised too.

Oh my god yes. I had the Epox 8RDA+ for my Athlon XP 2400+ Thoroughbred B.
I was so excited it was the B because it had more overclocking potential than the Thoroughbred A and Palomino versions.

Isn't the rumoured performance of this thing +10-15% over the 7900 XT? The 7900 XT can currently be bought for <£650 and has been <£600 a few times over the past six months, so £600 for the MBA would be a very disappointing price for the 9070 XT. It would make Nvidia's generational uplift seem generous.

Yeah, this is the point. We won't actually be getting much generational uplift from Nvidia since what we already have with a 4070 Super, won't be significantly improved upon with the 5070.
Needs to be more performance at the same price point to be worthwhile from either and AMD needs to work harder than Nvidia in order to gain marketshare like they claim they want.

I had an MSI Gaming 980Ti, thought it was one of the better models tbh.. but like motherboards it can vary per generation

I'm still running my MSI Gaming 970, though barely play much games on it nowadays for obvious reasons. I also recall when 1000 series launched, I tried nabbing a fire sale MSI Gaming 980ti from here on OCUK. They had finally run out of stock and offered to swap in a different model for my order, but I liked the 0 RPM mode of the one I ordered, so I declined and got refunded. Several years prior I had an MSI HD 6770, the first one was DoA and I had to RMA it. After that, the RMA replacement worked like a charm till someone broke it while I was away at uni. It's hit and miss, but I'd never swear by any brand. 10 years ago, I was chuffed at my Gigabyte Z97 motherboard, fast forward to last year and Asus of all brands was the only one who offered a B650 motherboard close to what I was looking for.

On that note, I'm looking for whatever 9070(XT) gives me a 0 RPM mode with close to 2 slots, while keeping cool and quiet. Might have to go for a higher end model. And all that depends on how well these cards perform and what they are priced at. I might be talking nonsense and just not bother upgrading for another year

You know what I've just thought... AMD should have enticed EVGA back into the game with MSI's 9xxx GPU allocation.

Opportunity to get a well-respected player on side...

They already have Sapphire who to me are second to none. AMD don't sell enough cards to have to many partners imo.
