What would the best way to cool this chips be without taking the card apart? Point a fan at the backplate? Attach a fan to the backplate where the chips are? Use a self-adhesive heat-sink?

If the contact (poor) is the cause then it will not help much.

Fan blowing onto the back would certainly help, having it vertically mounted helps also if you have bottom intake fans.

If you're watercooling then a waterblock on the backside of the card will help take the heat away, the bigger the surface area the better so a big block like ram blocks or threadripper blocks will do.

The backplate helps dissipate the heat better over a larger area, small ram chip heatsinks would get overwhelmed pretty quickly without some decent airflow over them at a pretty high rpm. An even better option would be a grooved or slitted backplate for increased surface area. Why manufacturers haven't done this and even waterblock manufacturers is beyond me.. i guess they think the flat backplate is adequate and still within spec temp wise.

remember that WB manufacturers got supplies of cards to work on late too, I think a lot only realised afterwards that the rear VRM's would be a heat issue.

Agree with this although it wouldn't have taken them too long to add additional grooves or channels on the backplate to compensate this. I mean we didn't see waterblock for cards till way into December when they were more available.

Think the only companies that did something about it was EK with the new FE blocks that have grooved backplates and aquacomputer with the XCS cooled backplates. I know Watercool has something in the works as they emailed me about it but dunno when that will surface. EK's new watercooled backplate looks rough and just quickly thrown together, there doesn't look like theres any design gone into especially for something that was a showcase at CES.

Managed to get my FE to hold steady at 825mV at 1890MHz, then a 500MHz overclock on the memory. Temps sit at around 63 degrees in my O11D, bloody well chuffed with that. Looped Port Royal for a couple of hours, Heaven and then had a long session on COD last night.

Is anyone able to work out what saving I'd be getting in terms of power draw? Not that it matters but it would be interesting to know

Do you mean 500mhz on the mem? 500mhz on the core is nuts, think most people are averaging around 200mhz tops on the 2x8pin cards and abit more on the 3x8pin cards.

you need to know what Watts its running @ now while gaming but id say you knocked of a good 100 watts @that mV

I've been gaming way too much since getting the 3090. My power bill went from £70/m to £120/m.............Heavily overclocked CPU and GPU using the 520w bios so I've put it back on the stock bios at 380w and put my cpu back to stock as the power costs are insane if you game all day and most of the night all month.

The 450w evga, 500w strix and 520w evga bioses all made the card desktop idle at 120w too whereas the stock bios for the gaming x trio idles at 25w.

One reason I've kept my 3700X(65 W) rather than upgrade to a 5800X(105 W), also the additional heat from that CPU would likely mean I need a better case.

How much of a clock speed increase are you seeing between 380w and 520w BIOS out of curiosity?
