What if I just want to debrand my desire so I can use HTC's updates instead of useless T-Mobile?
Make a goldcard and download the Bravo 2.10.405 RUU from shipped-roms.
Insert your goldcard, enable USB debugging on the phone then run the RUU.

I'll also add Radio information but initially didn't add it due to the fact that the ROM threads I linked to and on XDA for each ROM states the radio version required but I'll put up a paragraph outlining this point
The universal root utility works on almost any Android phone too so this may be aimed at Desire users but all other users can use the other utility I linked to as well. Even unrevoked supports a number of phones!

i quite like the cheap plastic feel as it makes it uber light to hold.
Desire owners refuse to step to the dark side fearing they may like it

Just two things Khaaan!
1. Might want to mention they need to put the phone into fastboot mode, so windows will prompt for the fastboot drivers to be installed. They can then use device manager etc..
2. You say "you can uninstall" HTC sync as if it's an option but they will need to uninstall as it messes with the root process. Even if the phone isn't put to sync mod.
