The Android rooting + flashing super guide

well managed to root with out any problem thanks again Khaaan. will do the next bit at work tomorrow as wanna watch the footy, and i like to get paid to play with my phone... long live the city council!

Answer these two questions:

  • Does it look like an iPhone 3G/3GS?
  • Is it made out of plastic?

;)

If thats all that is wrong with it i can see why desire owners are jealous ;)

Khaaan! its a good post but please get the title changed as its not for anything but the desire and you should aim it just at that phone. My Galaxy and my Hero uses next to nothing in the post.

Well I didn't want to mention the inferior TouchWiz, your oh so amazing mass of FAT32 blocked internal storage that's slow and requires a "lag fix". ;)

Mods, could someone edit the thread title using the one in the Op?

Thanks!

Nice guide khaaan.

Lol at the galaxy S VS desire :p

Here's my IMO on both mobiles, used the desire and the samsung galaxy S:

Samsung galaxy S:

+ Superior screen to desire
+ More ROM
+ Better battery life
+ Light weight
- Awful support by samsung, I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't update this mobile to gingerbread 3.0 TBH
+/- Don't know what the developing community is like, but if it's anything like the developing community at samdroid.net for the samsung i5700 spica then it is very good
- Looks too much like an iphone, so kind of ugly looking IMO

HTC Desire:

+ More RAM
+ Better build/design quality
+ HTC sense (personal preference this though, personally I don't care about it)
+ Much better support by HTC in terms of updates
+ Very good developing community
+ Nicer looking mobile

In terms of the camera/video recording, I am not 100% sure about it, but the desires camera is very good and I would say that the samsung Galaxy S would be just as good. Don't know what the recording is like for the galaxy S, but remember reading about the desires 720P HD recording being very poor, people only getting like 10-13 FPS, which is pretty crap tbh.

But then again if you root and flash a custom ROM on, the battery, performance etc. increases a lot especially for the desires battery (it's awful from what I have read and heard about it, friend can barely get a day out of it and have read a lot of people complaining about the battery life only lasting like a day as well in the desire thread and other forums, although only if people are on the stock sense ROMS)

So really it's down to personal preference, both are excellent mobiles, for me the main thing that will sway me towards a mobile in the future will be it's support and that is why I won't be buying a Samsung mobile again unless they learn from there mistakes, will be upgrading to a HTC mobile due to there support etc, plus better designed mobiles etc. IMO

EDIT: The screen on the samsung galaxy S is really jaw dropping, couldn't believe how good it was when I used it and watched a HD trailer of Avatar on it.

Anyway back on topic now :p

USB error when? What's throwing the error, unREVoked?

Have you:
  • Ensured HTC Sync is uninstalled? (Leave the drivers)
  • You have no apps trying to mount the SDCard? (Such as doubleTwist)
  • You have enabled USB debugging
  • Set the phone to automatically "charge only" without promting user on connection to PC.

I actually get as far as it reading what rom the phone has and the one its putting on, then the bootloader bit for a while then it bums out with the usb error. Done all the above :(

Right, this isn't working for me. I've got an AMOLED Desire running hboot 0.93-0001 and Froyo and I'm trying to run unrEVOked from a Mac.

I connect my Desire with a brand new Belkin MicroUSB cable, make sure USB Debugging Mode is activated and that the handset is set to 'Charge only'. Then I fire up unREVoked and it goes through most of the process but then craps out after the reboot and gives me the following error message: 'Internal error: couldn't find misc.'

Any ideas where to go from here?

It appears some people have issues when trying to root HBOOT 0.93 (strange as I have 0.93 and I rooted with UnrEVOked), there's two solutions:

  1. Run an older version of UnrEVOked - NOT RECOMENDED AS MISC NEEDS TO VALIDATED, COULD BRICK PHONE
  2. Downgrade your HBOOT

Seeing as option 1 really shouldn't be considered, you could try the HBOOT downgrade which is easy to do from here.

Then root after you've downgraded with the UnrEVOked 3.21 as per Khaaan!'s guide, then flash a custom ROM.

Radio updates can be applied at any time, your phone will still work but hot off the press features in the camera, for example, might not work until you update the radio image.

You flash it in exactly the same way as the ROM itself, from recovery. The forum thread you download your desired ROM from will mention what radio the developer recommends for his or her ROM, just download it from there. It does not need to be renamed, nothing needs to be renamed any more, that part only applied to older recovery methods where an "update.zip" needed to be placed on the SD card, those days are long gone now.

ok thanks did that... applied defrost, it installed then asked to reboot, i now have the 4 primary colours shaping into an 'x' on the screen been that way for 15min???

As long as the boot animation of the "X" is continuous and not flashing black every few seconds let it be. If it flickers black then loops again you have a boot loop, I'd recommend booting into recovery after pulling the battery and reflashing the ROM again after doing a full wipe.

Is that likely to result in things going totally pear-shaped if I've got Apps that have been moved to the SD card?

Just backup the card to a folder first, then make it into a goldcard if need be (if your phone is branded/running operator).

You'll lose all your data though, as data is formated but once you're rooted you can use Titanium backup so you'll never have to worry about losing data ever again.

i wiped cache and phone then reapplied and it works. so now have deforst. not quite sure what i do now. im wondering if to try the Desire HD mod?
