I think a better way to show the folly of the "proportional" argument is to point out that Hamas is "responding" to Israel "disproportionately".
This did not start with Israel indiscriminately launching thousands of rockets into Gaza.

Defending their interests, there is a distinction. Israel kicked off hostilities with pre-emptive airstrikes after issuing an ultimatum regarding access to the Straights of Tiran. There's probably a valid debate around the initial aggression but in terms of active hostility I'm not sure "pre-emptive airstrikes" are strictly defensive.
Pretty sure the other side were talking about destroying Israel etc before they decided to strike first.
Well, they amassed troops and announced that they were going to destroy Israel.

I understand that Israel were also massing on the border and there had been numerous incidents regarding the de-militarized zone between Israel and Syria prior to the invasion, as well as seperate incidents between Jordan and Israel. This conflict was not as clear cut as you seem to think it was.
Much obligedwile good craic = good fun, entertaining, a laugh.
Looks like Israel are trying to change the narrative a bit by emphasising "Iran-backed Hamas..." maybe so as to be able to ease into a ceasefire by shifting the blame away from the immediate events but overall doesn't look like there is much going for a ceasefire currently.

Likewise why are people here so bothered about conflict in other countries? As someone else put it, its mainly Jews and Muslims who have never even been to the Middle East sperging out in the streets and obviously picking their own side, like neither have any impartial view on the issues, and will simply side with their own religion out of herd mentality.
Its about the same as being mad if a criminal gets jailed based on feeling the need to defend them because they happen to be the same race as you. Protesting nowadays is nothing but pure BS carried out mainly by lunatics that are just out looking for reasons to smash windows and damage things.
