The Aokigahara forest in Japan

It’ll be my only visit to Japan and its on my brothers list. I’m up for a visit and staying somewhere close overnight but the camping isn’t my thing.

I do lots of mountain camping in the summer and winter in Scotland but this was his idea.

I've only been to Japan once, I can think of 100 other things to see and do before going there.

You can climb Mt Fuji and stay up there if you are up for that !

is he right enough in the head....I've got visions of something out of The Grudge crawling into the tent with you during the night!!

If it did some tentacle sodomy would probably be involved along with some over the top japanese commentators giving a play by play on the action.

What kind of **** wants to visit a forest where unfortunate people go to die let a lone camp there?

It's not normal.

It's like asking what kind of facilities a room at Auschwitz has. Have some respect.

catch yourself on - Auschwitz was a man made institution where people had no choice and were murdered. Aokigahara is a forest where it just so happens a relatively high number of people have committed suicide. comparing a forest to Auschwitz....jesus I've heard it all now.

Recommend climbing Fujisan, I did Fuji a few years back, in September near the end of the season, watched the sunrise from the top. Bit of a journey getting there from Tokyo and back again but well worth it

I stayed at the 8th station, the idea is to sleep till about 3am and then hike to the summit but chances are you won't get any sleep, as you and everyone else is cramped into bunks and it's noisy as hell , farting, snoring , the usual.

At the top it was bloody wet and cold with a nasty cross wind so waiting for the sunrise wasn't that enjoyable, there is a cafe but with limited spaces so you can't stop long before you're back out into the cold . Got lucky in the morning for the sunrise and 'unkai' ( sea of clouds) though then walked around the caldera before hiking back down. Great experience, although would bullet climb it next time, missing out the hut stop.

It's not technical and as pointed out it's more or less a bit of a hike, the trails are designed that way to be honest. If you want to you can start right at the bottom, walking through the forest.
