The Asus ROG SWIFT PG278Q – a 27” 1400p 144Hz Monitor with G-SYNC

I really don't see the issue with the price.

1440p with 1ms, 144hz and G-Sync. Probably the best gaming monitor you can buy?

If you want the same specs but can't afford 1440p, stick with the 1080p offerings.

People spend 2,3,4,5+ grand on their PC but then complain when one of the most important parts, the bit you actually look at costs more than a few hundred quid!

The fact that if you buy one to take advantage of running G-Sync at lower than 60fps with older hardware means you may not need to spend more money upgrading that hardware so soon will probably save you some money anyway.

I am hoping it means I can stick with my old GTX 680 Tri SLI until some real next gen cards come out to replace them.

ASUS have lost the plot. Disappointed

This, the fact that the UK gets shafted on price yet again, how can they sell it for $799 in the US and £720 here, this really does make no sense what so ever. I expect to pay a premium for the 1440p, G-Sync, 1ms response times but you could just as easliy buy this in america and ship it to the UK and still save money, that notion is utterly wrong in my eyes!

Computer retail has always been a bit shady. I worked on Tottenham Court Road for a number of years at a couple of retailers and it seems to be the only business where RRP means nothing, mostly you don't even see one.

It makes you wonder if ASUS are charging OCUK more because of limited supply or if it's just down to OCUK. Surely ASUS must have some practices in place with regards to RRP and cost price or there are legal guidelines for it. It seems ridiculous if not. if its all down to OCUK then it all feels a bit dirty. It's not as though it's a limited edition monitor, it's just taking advantage of customers desire to get one.

"You don't have to buy it" or "you're just jealous" is the common cry in support but irrelevant. The practice of it feels very computer fare on TCR and unprofessional.

I don't think buying it from the USA would save much unless you can bring it back with you and avoid customs and handling fees.

$800 in GBP is £470 + Shipping say £50 + VAT £94 + handling charges, local delivery etc say up to about another £50 so £664, may be less if you are lucky.
You could save may be £30-50.
Wouldn't you rather buy it from OcUK and have it the day after release and avoid any inconvenience if you want to send it back!

I normally buy stuff in the USA and bring it back with me but since I pay in USD from my US bank account I don't feel too bad about it.

I wouldn't do it with a monitor though!

I couldn't agree more, the people that say the price is fair isn't looking at the issue at hand! we all expect to pay a premium for high specification hardware. It just feels we in the UK/Europe end up paying more for it than the US!

I worked it out of a saving of about £100 saving, but your figures aren't far off, the website i quoted from charged the shipping at $35 and the VAT on it was around £104. It brought the price down to about £630 mark....... My point isn't really the fact you can import it for less, more to the point we're charged more in the 1st place.

$800 in GBP is £470

Look at it like this though.

In my opinion an American sees a dollar the same way we see a pound.

I bet they think $800 is expensive and would rather pay $470 if they could import it from another country in a similar manner.

The same way we might think £700 is expensive and would rather pay £470.

So at £700 we are getting charged less than them at $800 :p

Kind of wish I had studied economics to understand it better.

I see what your saying, i'm not looking at it from the consumers point of view. Asus sell it for $799 which ever way you look it at Asus value this product at that price, which is an equal price of £470....

Right or wrong thats just the way i look at it lol! i don't wish to start an argument its just my point of view!

I'd love to have this monitor and i might pick it up later on in the year when the rush has died down a bit and the price too!

I think the whole gsync adding the best part of £200 is way off the mark too, Acer are charging £599 for a 4k 1ms tn with gsync, would imagine same panel as the rest of the 28" 4k lot, first to market yet only £100 more then the Sammy and aoc and the same price as the Asus 4k...

799 dollars is not that bad..Problem is even after taxes are applied it doesnt add up to the insane price here on OC.UK. The same thing happens with the only retailer i could find who had it for "preorder" here in denmark which add'd another roughly 20% to the darn price AFTER taxes(im fine with taxes). So i wonder if this is the the retailer trying to cash in some quick money for those of us thinking of pulling the trigger early or if Asus has changed their MSRP from 799 to something higher. Either way it s**ks

i have no problem with the price as i understand new technology costs more, it is just that asus have priced it out of the region i can justify paying for a monitor.

But, is it Asus's fault?

Asus set a price - import/other costs - retailers have the final say, unless I'm missing something?

Patience is a great money saver ;) When your desire to have shiny new stuff matches their desire to make more money high prices will surely follow. Fair is an artifical state of affairs, it would be better if we weren't like that as a species but maybe that's also what drives us forward, the quest for more or better?

My take on the price is buy it if you can afford it but imo no toys are worth getting in debt for.

this to a certain extent - gibbo has already said that after pre-orders the "normal" price will be £660, so there is a good £60-70 first come first served price gouging on the go

Surprised the price hasn't already gone down to its normal retail price, this monitor can be had at that price elsewhere with the same ETA as here. So effectively you'd be paying £50-60 just to get it from Ocuk. No offense but there is zero appeal to that IMO.

If you were getting it before anyone else (store wise) I could understand it.

Whilst I respect Gibbo has a business to run and I don't know the ins and outs of it, as said above other retailers are offering this at RRP with same ETA. Really don't know where the £60 premium comes from now.
