Well, to be fair, that deal got them 80mil, wasn't exactly a bad deal was it.

But no, the money seems to have screwed Utd and gone to those who sold a duff player. Utd could simply have overpaid for an actually good player he represents if they really needed to pay him off for something. Getting a complete joke of a player for vastly too much off the recommendation of someone they should trust, still reeks of agent/Quieroz being in on a scam to sell Utd a turd and pocket the cash for themselves.

I think I could have negotiated that deal for Ronaldo. :o

If I'm not mistaken, Mendes played some part in De Gea's transfer too. Maybe Utd didn't want to pay Mendes directly themselves for his role in signing De Gea so they paid him via Vitória with the signing of Bebe.

I remember watching an agent being interviewed on SSN a year or so ago about agents roles in transfers and why clubs pay them so much and he as good as said that if a club isn't willing to pay what he asks for then his player either won't hear about the transfer or will be talked out of it.

I doubt we bought an unrelated player a year in advance of buying De Gea to secure his signature - and paying Mendes his fees as part of the De Gea transfer would have been a hell of a lot less suspicious (not that there is any need to cover them up) than paying them as part of the inflated transfer of a nobody.

The whole Bebe deal just strikes me as United being stitched up by third parties as DM suggests.

You really think you've paid €9m on an absolute nobody who nobody at Utd had seen play simply on one persons recommendation?

Clubs don't like showing that they pay agents and whether this was directly linked to De Gea's transfer or generally for deals he has done and will do in the future, it's seems very likely that the Bebe transfer was put together to pay Mendes.

Would Wenger take Pat Rice's recommendation, would people have taken Mourinho's recommendation, would Dalglish take Clarke's recommendation, etc, etc, etc, etc.

Yes, at that stage this was someone that Fergie would likely have discussed just about every club decision with(before he left) and would most likely upon hearing from someone that "the next Ronaldo is about to be signed by, some other club, plonk some money on the table for him this second", yes I can see it being possible.

Of course the other absurd thing would be, its not like Quieroz would have phoned Fergie up and 9 million would have been transfered within the hour. There is a thing called the internet, even a quick deal would take days, at no stage did anyone at Utd want to see a video of him, or do a medical test including kicking a few balls around..... it does come across as being stitched up but, Utd not taking 20 mins to look at him in training, either at their training ground or send someone over to kick a ball around with him for 20 mins, is quite unbelievable itself come to think of it.

However, if it was them paying him I couldn't really see it being for the De Gea deal, unless it was "we'll give you best part of 4mil or whatever, and you steer other clubs away from De Gea and talk Utd up to him at every chance to get him to sign for us".

Possible, sure, probable, not very likely. Pretty much whichever way you think about it, it stinks though.

So? He didn't do it with anyone else, and Carvalho was (and arguably is) very good! If he was bent like that, he'd be repeatedly signing loads of players... but he hasn't. When moving clubs, he's only ever taken two players with him (Carvalho twice and Ferreira once)...
Tiago
Deco
Maniche

All Mendes clients. There are more I'm sure, but I'm not going to be able to find out quickly.

Why on earth would we give Mendes a pay-off though? "Thanks for pimping out Ronaldo, here's £3m!" :/
What, other than the fact that he helped you sign Ronaldo in the first place? And got you a world record fee when he left? And those other players you've signed from Portgual (Anderson, Nani).

I find it more likely that it was cosy deal than that Alex Ferguson, winner of eleventy billion trophies, is naive enough to sign a player he knows nothing about, as you're suggesting.

You seem to have your "He's criticising Man Utd, MUST DEFEND HONOUR!" hat on, so I'd just like to state that I don't think this is an isolated case. I very much expect that his kind of stuff goes on at every big club, it just happens to have become most obvious with the Bebe deal. Which is why I'm wondering if they'll be able to dig anything up in their investigation.

Deco was signed by Scolari, Maniche was "signed" by Mourinho, though the later was only on loan, and Tiago came from Benfica not Porto. He also took a couple players to Porto, Valente and Derlei, but those are the only ones I can find.

You seem to have you're "I'm going to make assumptions and **** jokes"hat on as I'm open to the possibility that this was some dodgy deal, however I think making a bung by paying a WTF amount of money for an unknown homeless man is possibly the most stupid way of doing so.

I dunno, I think it probably seemed like a better way of doing it than a direct payment that would probably raise more questions.

As for **** jokes, I always have that hat on.
