The Batman (Matt Reeves)

Saw this the other day. Loved the film, but three hours is murder on my bladder. Looking forward to getting this on Blu-ray when I can watch and have a toilet break without missing anything. :D

I enjoyed it. Bit different from the usual format and closer to what I’d imagine long-time comic fans wanted from a Batman story. Aesthetically terrific (Greig Fraser is on a roll behind the camera). Not without problems obviously - could have done with a heavier editing hand as the story doesn’t justify the length, the Bruce side was undeveloped (plus awful haircut), ditto Alfred, everything was a bit too easy for Batman to figure out… but I’d watch another one if they take the same formula and refine it.

I was meant to see this within 2 days of release but I had a flat tyre that day and missed seeing it with my mates, and didn't really get a chance after that

But I was able to watch it now it's on HBO Max and really enjoyed it. Definitely agree with a few other posters that it has Se7en vibes. One or two people complained it was too dark at the cinema, but I gotta say it looked great on my OLED TV, didn't have any issue seeing what was going on at any point.

They alluded to 'The Batman' creating riddler (or certainly, the riddler stating that Batman gave him inspiration) so that was good. That's been a theme in the arkham games before.

It quadrupled its budget, so a sequel would be nice. Maybe they can use some batman villains that haven't been used much in previous movies. Villains who would fit more in to a World with Batman being a great detective, as opposed to a caped crusader/superhero.

Well, it started sooo good, it had such a different vibe, almost Max Payne / Sin City style to it, but half way through it just turned into a generic action film. Such a shame, it was gona be maybe an 8 but I can't help but feel it's more like a 5 or 6
There was just no need for the whole flooding section of this film, it didn't nothing to help the style of the film, it was a played out superhero saves the people trope, which the start of the film had worked so hard to not be and it kinda ruined the way cat woman acted. The film just fell apart after the riddler got caught. The whole happy ending music and riding away into the sunset, was this a executive decision or something to keep movie morons happy. Shame.

I think Bruce Wayne was the weakest part for me.

Was the movie trying to suggest that because of his disinterest in Wayne enterprises, he was also culpable for letting the 'Renewal' fund be taken advantage of, and therefore somewhat responsible for the rot and corruption in Gotham?

Don't think it was so much blaming him for it, as showing him that he can do more than just punching street thugs to save the city.

I enjoyed it over all. I liked seeing a version of batman that still needed to learn what is means to be batman. Though i felt like the pacing went a bit wonky towards the end. Solid 8 out of 10 for me, but can see how it wouldn't be everyones cup of tea.

Too long.

Not sure about emo batman, reminded me of Abed for some reason.

On the whole though, I thought it was alright.

I think they should've called this show "The Boredom"... One of the worst Batman movies I've ever seen, lasted just about an hour before falling asleep.

IDMB has been flooded with review bots giving it 10/10

Meh.

Great to see the Bat back to being the World's Greatest detective, but:

Jeffrey Wright - great actor, but was rubbish in the Jim Gordon role - totally phoned in. Don't know if it was him or the script.

Bat/Bruce Wayne - enjoyed the brooding Bat and the 'growing part' at the end, Vengeance to Protector, but as Bruce Wayne, it was awful. I get the Emo comments now.

Alfred - underused.

Riddler - good script for the Riddler, but found the actor very underwhelming.

Some great background scenery and lighting.

Story was meh and a bit convenient and all over the place.

Pattison was very good aside when playing Bruce.

City didn't feel like Gotham - could have been any generic city.

Penguin - i completely forgot Colin Farrell played him until the credits rolled. Thought his costume/make-up and accent was fantastic - definitely an award coming up for that.

6/10.
