Although, cynicism aside, he's just announced his missus is expecting, so this will allow him to be at home more.
I imagine this is a major factor. Even with only half the races live, he is away an awful lot for the F1 coverage.

I don't think sky would ever do a F1 race and put adverts in it. They would get lynched by fans.
A spokesperson for Sky Sports told AUTOSPORT: "We won't have adverts while the races are running. We know they were very unpopular in the past and we don't have to go down that route."
The BBC have the F1 deal for another 6 or 7 years. It's a good way to fill a Sunday afternoon that would normally get very few viewers. I don't think sky would ever do a F1 race and put adverts in it. They would get lynched by fans. They don't do it for football, they won't do it for F1.
