The best ever cover version (IMO)

best cover in my oppinion is puff daddys ill be missing you.

Much much better than the police's ill be watching you

Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha ad infinitum. I think you're very much in the minority with that one :)

Some of my fave covers:

Gun - Word Up
Little Angels - Tired of Waiting
Soft Cell - Tainted Love
Dixy Chicks - You Can't hurry Love (not sure why I like that one :D)

SOAD's cover of Berlin's Metro is pretty good IMO. I dont know waht my "best cover ever" would be, there are too many good covers to list and it seems to change from month to month.

I enjoy Sepultura's cover of Symptom of the Universe and Fear Factory's cover of Cars too, but best I dont really know.

Tough question!

see, theres best cover.. and then theres "cover that out-does the original"

thats a good cover no doubt, but it doesnt out-do the original :)

Guns n' Roses' - Live n let die and Nightwish's - The snowman (walking in the air) are 2 covers that i think completely beat the originals in every aspect :)

Tool's best cover is in fact a cover of one of their own song - either Third Eye or Pushit...
Sorry, what?

How does a band go about covering their own songs exactly? If you're referrring to tracks on Salival which were live recordings then yes I agree that they're both excellent, but a band playing their own songs live can make whatever changes they like and you can't really refer to them as 'covers'.

I like Feeder's Power of Love, and Can't Stand Losing You isn't too shabby either.

Ms Jackson by the Vines deserves an honourable mention.

Thought of a couple more decent covers -

Steppenwolf Feat. Philip Steir - Magic Carpet Ride (more of a remix than a cover)
Cranberries - Go Your Own Way

Children of Bodom's cover of The Trooper :)

Their cover of Europe's The Final Countdown is far superior.

Other great covers:

Ultraviolence's cover of Sabbath's Paranoid.

Pitchshifter's cover of Big Black's Kerosene.

Easyworld's cover of Hopelessly devoted from the Grease soundrack.

*n

Can't believe nobody's mentioned Jeff Buckley's cover of Hallelujah

Closely followed by Ryan Adam's version of Wonderwall - love how he takes a whole different angle on it

I'm also a big fan of Ben Harper's cover of Strawberry Fields Forever and (please don't dismiss this too lightly) William Shatner and Joe Jackson's odd cover of Common People

A cover of Kate Wiedlin's Rush Hour.

Can't remember who it was by. Might have been Joyrider.

Also Gun's cover of Cameo's Word Up.

Yup, Joyrider (Jane Wiedlin btw :p)

Word up is a great cover, so is AAF's smooth criminal and Metallica's go at Whisky in the Jar
