What would you say is the best RTS ever made? Old or new, something that you still love playing, whether it be C&C1, RA2, Starcraft, TA, or something newer like Supcom or Dawn of War/CoH?

For me its dawn of war or red alert 2, love them both.

TA.

Although I think I probably enjoyed Dune 2000 more simply because me and a mate used to link up our PSX's and have a right old laugh.

Is homeworld like traditonal RTS games? like build a base and attack? because it looks completely different? Might give it a try though.

You start off with a mothership and have to start gathering resources. Begin research and build a fleet that is then carried across to the next mission. Has good story developement between missions told by grey scale animated images and voice over.

No idea if there's a compilation available with all three games. The first one might look very aged now. Still has nice music from what I remember.

homeworld for me were probably the most stand out. i loved starcraft and C&C and even the new SupCom. but Homeworld had a great story, very well told, added a 3D element fo your play and was one of the few RTS games to try and break the mold. it did it very well with Cataclysm and HW2 as well.

starcraft or warcraft or c&c :)

My favourite RTS atm is Warhammer Dawn Of War Dark Crusade as I find it more interesting than stuff like C&C/supcom etc
Also 1v1 matches are over quickly in comparison to some RTS games which take forever.

It may be showing its age now but I vote C&C Tiberian Dawn (the first one) simply because it was probably the first very cool and very fun RTS - at least in my books.

RA1 was great also but it was mostly just a rehash of the above with a new story, maps and units. Therefore I'd probably vote C&C Tiberian Sun w/ Firestorm as the next in line.

Anyone remember "Dark Reign"? Quite a fun RTS.

The most engrossing RTS i have ever played was homeworld due to a storyline that at points almost reaches perfection, however the gameplay was a times slightly flawed (i am a very synical gamer, its still leagues above the average RTS in terms of gameplay). The best RTS for solid gameplay in my opinion is dawn of war.

On a side note, i haven't played either addon for dawn of war, are they worth the rather small investment? (ironically, the fact the price is so low is what's making me wary of said addons)

[EDIT] Oh hello by the way, decided to emmigrate from being a solid lurker to a poster on these rather overwealming forums

Multiplayer? StarCraft by a massive margin, just see how many professional players there are in korea and the states!

Single player? WTF are you playing an RTS in single player for?

I bought the anthology as it was only £18 delivered :)
For single player I liked the original Dawn Of War best as it had a good storyline.
I only really wanted to get Winter Assault and Dark Crusade so I could play online and also play as all the races :) altho Dark Crusade is ok both singleplayer and online.
There are some cool custom addons that people have made aswell :) one of them follows the WH:40K codex's
