The best starting 11 in the world, what's yours?

I'd have voted for him to be world player of the year for last year too. Messi's consistency last year wasn't as good as Ronaldo's (partially because of injuries), but Messi at his best he was better than Ronaldo at his.

If you just look at the last 5-6 months then Messi has been out on his own though in terms of ability and consistency.

Messi is way above any player, 21 years old and that good is remarkable.

Wouldn't surprise me if in 20 years time people here say he's the greatest footballer they've ever seen in their lifetime if he never gets a bad injury which happens a lot these days to good players or ones with great potential.(like Owen was never the same after his and Ronaldo who both would have been amazing strikers otherwise.)

Ronaldo won world player of the year probably mainly due to the huge Man Utd fanbase and more people seemed to view him rather than Messi probably because spanish football isn't aired as much in other countries as the premiership.

Then again he did have a ridiculously good season, 42 goals in 49 games is just outstanding in the premiership though goals doesn't say everything.

By the way i am talking about the Brazilian Ronaldo in brackets above!

Absolute tosh mate, he won it because he deserved it! The stats dont lie one bit, that many goals from a winger is umbelievable!

Dont get me wrong mate, Ronalso went missing on the big occasions far too many times for me but you still cant deny the stats especially for the premiership which is by far the strongest league.

Messi on the other hand will win WPOY this year if he continues to produce the form he is doing. Dunno maybe Iniesta could be in with a shout, unfortunatley if Barca dont win the CL then the latter wont even be considered!

Yeah, I think we can all stop paying attention to this poster after this gem.

Fans don't vote for world player of the year, its fellow professionals, and managers, from all round the world.

What makes you think they do not support teams themselves? also people seem to watch Man Utd the most in the world be it whatever they are.

I know it's decided by the above but the large fan base gives the advantage for obvious reasons.

Stop digging :p.

For that theory to have any substance to it at all, it might help to find an example of a Man U player winning it when perhaps it wasn't deserved (therefore giving you grounds to say that playing for Man U may have swayed the vote).

There have been Man U players up for the award over the last few years, but ultimately they didn't win it because there was someone more deserving. Ronaldo won it because he deserved it over the term, simple as that really.

I agree it is well known that managers abnd players around the world all support Man Utd.

Now would you like me to give you a hand out of that hole?

I must have watched a different game. Messi looked good, but produced nothing because Evra pushed him into areas where he was able to be controlled, this was the case in both games.

Messi did do more than Ronaldo in those games (big whoop) offensively, but Messi, especially in the second game didn't even appear a threat. Evra had him controlled, as he had everyone controlled. With Evra in the team we conceeded 1 goal in Europe last season and that was to a double deflection off Ferdinand and Vidic in a freak occurance else he would have been a part of a phenomenal record.

You must have been watching a different game. Messi walked past Evra nearly everytime he got the ball and iirc it was the 2nd leg where he was at his best too. IIRC a lot of Utd fans in the spoilers thread (of the 2nd leg) mentioned how they felt sorry for Messi after the way he played.

Again, im not saying Evra is a bad defender but Messi pulled him apart in the semi, just like he would have done any other LB.

Messi ran hard all game, but Evra was able to direct Messi where he wanted him to run, mainly out the danger zone.
And for the record, the best player in those games was Brown in the first and Tevez in the second. Messi was arguably the 2nd best player though.

Rio was good but Brown was immense that night. Messi saw a lot of the ball but did barely anything with it. In the first game Ronaldo did a lot more when he did have the ball (should have had 2 penalties in addition to the one he didn't convert)

The thing Ronaldo did best in those games was his defensive work, he was immense in his own box and cleared danger continuously, but didn't get the credit for it (defensive play seldom does by anyone).
