The Callisto Protocol

Yeah, the stutters were not anywhere near as bad as the reviews suggest. At least not for me, very noticeable but not "worse game of all time" bad like some reviews are suggesting. From what I've played so far I think it should be easily fixable
I'm not sure if that UE4 stutter can ever truly be fixed, but hopefully it can be improved as it's clearly a bigger issue for some people.

The stuttering is minor for me though and it won't stop me enjoying it, as I love a creepy single player game that you can get completely immersed in.

I had similar hopes for Dying Light 2, but I found that game boring after a few hours of playing. Hoping the same does not happen here.

^^ UE4 stutters can be fixed, this is the first game I have played where I have personally experienced this. No other UE4 game I have played to date has had this on my system at least, and those that did for others, were patched.

Yup I could play through it and just be a bit annoyed when the stutter happens each time I go to a new bit, during combat for me it was fine. I just don't fancy knowing I paid £50 for a game that has a handful of jarring issues at launch which points to a distinct lack of care for PC gamers by the devs. £50 to me is a near perfect launch title with minimal bugs that can be patched in good time, but nothing in the way of stuttering or graphical tech features that are broken.

The sooner they dump UE4 for games the better, and it's an absolute joke the state they release titles in these days and the way shader cache is done (or not done!). #stutterstruggle

Having said that Days Gone - which I was very surprised to learn runs on UE4 - is now smooth as silk on my PC, so it can be done.

It is generally very smooth Days Gone, but even that has it. If you carefully monitor the frame time graph, there are very small hitches as you ride around the world. If you don't have a frame time graph on your overlay, you may not notice it but its there.

Not sure if you ever watch Bang4Bucks videos on YouTube, he has a 13900K and a 4090 and it happens in his videos as he has a frame time graph.

I also see it on the 7950X and my 4090 too, and it happened on the 6950 XT I had previously before that.

Getting very mixed reviews from the people not paid to review it.
I expect the Worthabuy guy will slam the game and give it a huge thumbs down. Mind you, he also slated Darktide and gave Elden Ring 0/10 so I guess we can take his thoughts with a cosmic amount of salt :D

Digital foundry covered this, This is more a game dev bug than an engine bug. It's like as if the frame time is different when on the bike vs when on foot, because timing is perfectly synched when on foot. If it was the UE4 stutter, it would exist both on foot and on bike.

I do have a frame time graph on my overlay - I'm very 'anal' (if one can say that these days :p ) about stutter to the point of obsession. I got the first Gsync monitor ever when they came out.
It does have the odd rare blip but it's very good for a UE4 game. And a really good game in general.

Aye the bike riding is very odd in Days Gone. Almost feels like slow motion but not, and it's not stutter or judder related. A very odd frame pacing type issue I've not seen in any other game I don't think.

The exact same thing happens in the Far Cry series too, stuttering as you move around the world.

Am sure there's plenty of other UE4 games too but that's all I can think of now off the top of my head.

EDIT - To be clear, I'm not referring to the slowdown when driving a bike.

This is what I'm referring to @wunkley. If you watch that clip you see them repeatedly as he's driving around. Far Cry series are the same. All on UE4.

Aye my frametime graph looks similar to that when riding the bike. It does mostly feeeel smooth though. In my experience I've learnt to trust my eyes rather than just a frametime graph - they doesn't always tally.
(Also Far Cry games aren't UE4 dude - they're Dunia/ Cryengine based.)

Days Gone had the same stutter on PS5 when riding the bike when I played it (before it was released to PC) and I didn't see it mentioned anywhere. So it just seems like a lot (most) people don't notice or care about small frametime stutters, they do my head in personally which is why I'm always cautious of Unreal Engine games on PC.

Yeah, you are right on Far Cry. I must be thinking of another game, can't remember what though. Going senile I guess. :D

Yeah Days Gone is fine for 99% of the time, but as you spend a lot of time on the bike driving around that little hitch has always stuck out like a sore thumb.

You could say - they got within Striking Distance of releasing a finished game...
