Are there any Detailers in the North East (Stockton/Middlesbrough region) on here?
Wouldn't mind getting my car detailed and having a full once over done.....

Isn't Gliptone quite highly rated for rejuvinating leather too?

I've got both Gliptone cleaner and conditioner and it's awesome.

Probably doesn't smell as good as the Zaino though. It's definitely a bit 'funky'.

Quick question, what sponge/cloth would you guys suggest to use?

For doing what specifically?

The general rule of thumb is save your sponges for doing the dishes because they drag dirt across your paintwork and scratch it.

To wash the car you want a mitt of some description; lambs wool is my weapon of choice.

To dry the car you want a waffle-weave or deep-pile drying towel as these will reduce the amount of contaminates you drag across the paintwork.

To apply polish/waxes/sealants, there are specialist applicator pads and to remove them it's best to use a microfiber cloth.

And you thought it was going to be a quick question!

Hi all.

I'm looking at detailing my car on the cheap if possible, does anyone have any experience of the detailing kit that Autoglym do?

Or does anyone have any recomendations for a similar price?

Thanks

Its not really a detailing kit as such, more of a clay kit with a sample bottle of Super Resin Polish.

I've never used the AG Kit, always used the Meguiars Smooth Clay Kit. Works well, the wax supplied smells great and leave a nice finish too!

Nice one.

Clay kit is what I meant really, I'm not looking to spend a fortune just need the basics really, clay bar, cloth, lube.

I'll have a look at the Meguiars as well, I think the motor shop I use only stocks the AG stuff though, they have a Meguiars section that sells everything else but the clay bar kit!!

There are two versions of the Megs kit, one is the "Quik Clay" (Clay & Lubricant) and the other is the "Smooth" kit (Clay x2, Lube, Wax, MF Cloth). You can get them for £20ish delivered on eBay or Amazon :)

I'm aware I may get shot down in flames here but I wondered what the general consensus was on the Astonish car polish products?

I've recently bought two bottles along with the alloy wheel cleaner and the upholstery cleaner.

I probably wouldn't use their interior cleaning products as they tend to leave a shine, my car is shine free inside and matte :p

The exterior stuff though like anti mist glass cleaner, quick detailing spray etc works very nicely. At £1 a bottle it's dirt cheap too. I use the detailing spray when drying after a wash as it stops watermarks and leaves an additional means of thin protection above the wax.

Thanks for that, and it's use would be just to clean the car no polish or drying :p

thanks for the information though!

The tyre/trim shine is pants. The wheel cleaner and tar remover are actually ok (tar remover doesn't remove much in the way of tar but works good as a general APC on the exterior).

Spray 'n' Shine is actually pretty good, it leaves my Octavia with a nice shine but as mrk says, you need something underneath (wax ideally) for it to make the best out of the bodywork. Spraying it on thinking it will be a substitute for wax won't work :)

The shampoo they do is actually quite good too, nice a bubbly and gives a really nice, thick lather.

I'm still using that muc-Off shampoo that was on offer with the kit some months ago, it's not even down 25% and I've given it a few mansized squirts in the bucket each week too!

random question - steam cleaning of an engine bay... good / bad / waste of time??? thoughts please! tempted to get this done locally, but would I be better off just chucking degreaser on there and a light spray of water?? n00b car cleaning query!!!

I've always put cling wrap on electrical connections (bit of WD40 helps as well), with a good engine cleaner (AG Engine & Machine Cleaner is good) and then pressure wash off after a couple of minutes. Finish it off by spraying on Auto Glym Instant Tyre Dressing and leave it to drip dry (wipe over lightly after 30mins or so) and you get good results :)

P.S - A slightly warm engine helps to evaporate any standing water, too.

Does anyone know what consistency Extra Gloss Protection should be?

Have had my bottle a couple of years and today when I went to use it, even after a good shake it was like water and I can't remember if it is normally like this? Wondering if it froze in the garage over the snow period we had and made it go off??
