The funny thing is, the previous owner of my SLK55 didn't seem to ever wash it. So while it was covered in tree sap, tar and goodness knows what else, a good detailing session revealed zero swirl marks underneath.

It probably is better for the paint to not wash it than use aggressive cleaning methods that grind abrasive dust particles and things into the clear coat, as long as bird droppings or what have you don't etch into the paint.

Then like you say, a good decontamination, clay etc can work wonders if you take your time with it.

You only have to look at the number of people who use automated car washes or the £5 hand washes to realise we are in the minority for wanting to keep our cars looking good. Most people don't care about swirles and scrates, only caring that the car is clean.

I had a mate who owned a black car didn't care about how the car was washed as long as it was clean. That was until he parked next to a recently detailed black car on a sunny day :D that soon changed his mind on washing technique.

Agreed Greboth, but I also believe some people just need a little education. My sister for example put her Mini through the car wash and I could tell straight away when I saw it in sunlight. I then showed her the two bucket technique and gave her a new wash mitt and now that's how she cleans her car. :)

If you can find someone who washed their own car then yes a little education can go a long way to improving their car. In my experience though when you tell someone you wash your own car you are much more likely to just get a look of '*****! you do that?!' and that is before even mentioning washing technique or how long it takes me for a thorough wash.

Lol exactly!
It takes the Poles 5 to 10minutes to wash a car my size, it takes me 4 hours. Is there a 4 hour difference in the end result? To us, sure. To most other people? Unlikely.

Anyone spray the pressure washer around there tyres like the space/gap above?

Well I did after trying to give the car a good clean last weekend and now when driving over speed humps I hear a squeak on the front right end, ugh.

Yes, every time.

It doesn't feel like 4 hours, time flies  That 4 hours is from start to finish, finish being applying tyre gel at the very end and packing away the pressure washer, hose and buckets etc.

What are you doing for 4 hours?!!! For a full on detailing session sure but it takes me probably 30-45 minutes to do a regular wash and that is a very careful wash, detailing spray to finish off with, glass cleaning, and maybe dust the interior. I have no swirls so I'm not cutting corners :p

This is mrk we are talking about, his standard wash could be like a full on professional detail to us.

I could see him spending 30min cleaning the wing mirror :p

I thought that was normal... Guess not?

Every crevice, every nook etc is what I wipe and dry out, and then the interior. Doesn't help much on a black car though I'm finding.

I'm surprised even that takes 4 hours! I do all that in less than an hour. And that includes taking my time with the QD so as not to leave streaks.

Dunno what to say, with wax and polish the longest has been 6 hours.

Edit lol! Reminds me of a time I decided to wash and wax after work one Friday and it was night by the time i finished, some total LADS walked past and said "that's dedixation" :o
