Collected my new car last weekend, its a 1993 Rover 220 GSI with 46k on the clock, bought it off ebay, went down to London to collect it, which turned into a mission itself, since the M25 was shut in both directions where I wanted to go.
Its in desperate need of a clean, looks like its lived under a tree for the past 16 years, drove it back from London with the exhaust blowing and a little on the loud side....
"Needs new backbox" turned into, centre pipe fallen off and not even connected to the backbox. :doublesho
First day, changed cambelt and alternator belt in my friends garage, gave the car a quick look over. Hoovered out the inside for my drive up North on the Sunday. Collected a full CAT back stainless exhaust on the way up which was a bargain buy.
Here are my shots from earlier in the week, not quite sure why the shots are blurred, it wasnt very dark when I took them..
Mmmmm nice!
Then during the week I didnt spend much time on the body, wanted to get the exhaust off to change it.
Of course of the 6 nuts all but 2 either snapped or were so rusted that it was impossible to get a socket to bite. Ended up cutting through them with a dremel and then the studs on the CAT will be drilled out and replaced with nuts/bolts.
Some exterior before pictures.
Just been pressure washed and quickly APC'd down as I couldnt stand it being mingy!
Some strange contamination on the roof, think will clay off though.
Engine nice and dry and starts now, not done anything more to it yet though. Just a clean with APC and AG Engine and Machine Cleaner, then pressure washed it. I removed the matting from the underside of the bonnet as when I tried to clean it, it just started to fall apart in clumps.
Interior is good, not done anything apart from a quick hoover.
Then todays work, got started about half 11 until 6, but only really did 2-3 hours cleaning.
Rinsed the car down again, worked on the boot and door shuts, as you can see they were pretty manky. Brushed down with 4:1 APC and then pressure washed them which brought them up 10x better than the before picture. The light brown stuff in the middle I think is under seal or some form of rust protection, there are small patches of it all over the car as if it has been blasted into places to protect the car, and just some has come through where it shouldn't have. It wont come off using product, but using a finger nail will make it come off, it has a texture similar to fudge.
Lovely mould and crud under the spoiler. A little rust too which ill just wire wheel off using the dremel and treat with some hammerite.
Then washed using two bucket method (one with shampoo, one for rinsing the mitt in).
The strange contamination on the roof mostly shifted using Sonus Green Clay, ill be buying some more aggressive clay as even after quite a few passes there still looked to be areas which couldnt be lifted by it.
Close up of some strange water like marks which didnt come off using clay.
Spotting some swirls on the bonnet in direct sunlight.
A brew and then started using Megs #83 on a Polishing pad, this didn't seem to be enough, stepped up to #83 on a cutting, which was having more effect, not sure quite how much as the pad seemed to be clogging a bit, so gave up for the day with the polishing.
Not sure what this strange clip is on the drivers side, or what it is supposed to do, you can clip it up, but then you can still pull the belt forwards, so not sure... :?
Dirt shield or a deflector to help angle the air into the radiator? Never seen one before, or the towing eye, im sure my '95 220 GSI never had any of these! Note the standard issue T series drip tray with sand in it under the car
Spent the rest of the afternoon installing front fog lights, I had a BNIB Rover foglight kit for the 200/400 to suite the mk2 dash and wire into the mk2 loom. I had one from Rimmer Bros last year which was cheaper, but wired in for the mk3 dash as found in the coupe. Both were/are genuine Rover kits, but this one is better as it integrates with the loom properly.
Ill just be working on the car in my evenings after work, the girlfriend has gone a little mad as I have been out there most evenings this week on the car for a few hours at a time.
Any recommendations for which clay to try instead?
Is the pad clogging likely to be the paint being too warm, I was working outside and the car was hot from being in direct sun, although it did go behind the clouds after lunch.
I didn't seem to be having as much success as I was hoping, although I am a beginner at this, so perhaps I wasn't working the product enough. Up to now I have only done small spots on previous cars to try remove scuffs etc, but felt that they worked quite well.
Its a nice car overall anyway, has had plenty spent on it in the past, new everything pretty much and with the mileage being so low, drives very tight.
