Thanks for your input guys! The trouble is I live in deep darkest Suffolk and we only recently got the motor car! Where can I buy these top notch wax on the internetz?

ebay is worth a look, i managed to get a few bargains from there. Much cheaper than Halfords anyway.

a lot of people use like the value APC cleaners in tesco, the "daisy" stuff, diluted down 10/1 (water/product). 4/1 for arches.

yip, dont get ripped off by Megs APC. Its just not worth it. I've said before I use a citrus degreaser made for mountain bikes then an APC also made for bikes. Its cheap. I hear ALDI do some APC stuff to, but if its anything like thier food, it's likely to be laced with Ethylene Glycol!

Cheers chaps! Tesco it is :D

cleaned my car today, just using standard turtlewax stuff

Washed (using my special one bucket method ;))
clayed (meguirs clay bar kit)
polished (turtlewax polish)
clayed the windows too then cleaned with halfords window cleaner

Not bad for a first attempt at anything other than a rinse with a hose

got new tyres for the standard alloys (rears) but the camber is off at the front, so waiting to get that sorted before i put the new tyres on the front.

Should be sorted tuesday

Collected my new car last weekend, its a 1993 Rover 220 GSI with 46k on the clock, bought it off ebay, went down to London to collect it, which turned into a mission itself, since the M25 was shut in both directions where I wanted to go.

Its in desperate need of a clean, looks like its lived under a tree for the past 16 years, drove it back from London with the exhaust blowing and a little on the loud side....

"Needs new backbox" turned into, centre pipe fallen off and not even connected to the backbox. :doublesho

First day, changed cambelt and alternator belt in my friends garage, gave the car a quick look over. Hoovered out the inside for my drive up North on the Sunday. Collected a full CAT back stainless exhaust on the way up which was a bargain buy.

Here are my shots from earlier in the week, not quite sure why the shots are blurred, it wasnt very dark when I took them..

Mmmmm nice!

Then during the week I didnt spend much time on the body, wanted to get the exhaust off to change it.

Of course of the 6 nuts all but 2 either snapped or were so rusted that it was impossible to get a socket to bite. Ended up cutting through them with a dremel and then the studs on the CAT will be drilled out and replaced with nuts/bolts.

Some exterior before pictures.

Just been pressure washed and quickly APC'd down as I couldnt stand it being mingy!

Some strange contamination on the roof, think will clay off though.

Engine nice and dry and starts now, not done anything more to it yet though. Just a clean with APC and AG Engine and Machine Cleaner, then pressure washed it. I removed the matting from the underside of the bonnet as when I tried to clean it, it just started to fall apart in clumps.

Interior is good, not done anything apart from a quick hoover.

Then todays work, got started about half 11 until 6, but only really did 2-3 hours cleaning.

Rinsed the car down again, worked on the boot and door shuts, as you can see they were pretty manky. Brushed down with 4:1 APC and then pressure washed them which brought them up 10x better than the before picture. The light brown stuff in the middle I think is under seal or some form of rust protection, there are small patches of it all over the car as if it has been blasted into places to protect the car, and just some has come through where it shouldn't have. It wont come off using product, but using a finger nail will make it come off, it has a texture similar to fudge.

Lovely mould and crud under the spoiler. A little rust too which ill just wire wheel off using the dremel and treat with some hammerite.

Then washed using two bucket method (one with shampoo, one for rinsing the mitt in).

The strange contamination on the roof mostly shifted using Sonus Green Clay, ill be buying some more aggressive clay as even after quite a few passes there still looked to be areas which couldnt be lifted by it.

A brew and then started using Megs #83 on a Polishing pad, this didn't seem to be enough, stepped up to #83 on a cutting, which was having more effect, not sure quite how much as the pad seemed to be clogging a bit, so gave up for the day with the polishing.

Not sure what this strange clip is on the drivers side, or what it is supposed to do, you can clip it up, but then you can still pull the belt forwards, so not sure... :?

p1000324w.jpg

Dirt shield or a deflector to help angle the air into the radiator? Never seen one before, or the towing eye, im sure my '95 220 GSI never had any of these! Note the standard issue T series drip tray with sand in it under the car

Spent the rest of the afternoon installing front fog lights, I had a BNIB Rover foglight kit for the 200/400 to suite the mk2 dash and wire into the mk2 loom. I had one from Rimmer Bros last year which was cheaper, but wired in for the mk3 dash as found in the coupe. Both were/are genuine Rover kits, but this one is better as it integrates with the loom properly.

Ill just be working on the car in my evenings after work, the girlfriend has gone a little mad as I have been out there most evenings this week on the car for a few hours at a time.

Any recommendations for which clay to try instead?

Is the pad clogging likely to be the paint being too warm, I was working outside and the car was hot from being in direct sun, although it did go behind the clouds after lunch.

I didn't seem to be having as much success as I was hoping, although I am a beginner at this, so perhaps I wasn't working the product enough. Up to now I have only done small spots on previous cars to try remove scuffs etc, but felt that they worked quite well.

Its a nice car overall anyway, has had plenty spent on it in the past, new everything pretty much and with the mileage being so low, drives very tight.

Offers on the private plate accepted ;) If you are Justin Timberlake then this plate is for you, L22 Justin Timberlakes Car!

I used to think washing my car was enough but for a bit now i have been doing a lot more .. and after reading a few post got a DA polisher and have spent 15hrs polishing the car but the differance is very good ... almost like new again ..

do i need help 15hrs people on my road thing i am mad with the time i have spent at the weekend.

Hi
Sorry I was getting ready to go out hands started typing faster than the brain can think. That will be the red bull mix

It’s nice to see the difference you can make

I'm sure I'd seen that kicking around the north east before, not exactly easy to miss :D :p

How much is that XXX wax you used? Looks the absolute mutts nutts... could be well persuaded on some of that!

It was about £14.
I've used a lot of it now, on a few different cars. It's still beading very nice on mine and it's been wahsed a lot since (yellow car = hard to keep looking clean)

I really reccomend buying a new, larger than normal microfibre to buff the wax off though, as cloths soon get saturated with wax and instead of taking / buffing it off you just end up pushing it around.

I've not got a lot to compare the xxx to, but everyone who has used it aggrees on it's value for money. If you're after somehting a little bit better, for another few quid Chemical guys 'petes '53' is worth a look.

You know that Skoda pickup would be extra awesome if it had a 1.8 20vT engine plopped in there somewhere ;)

:D wouldn't it just! I'm looking at what will fit in with the least amount of pain. 1.6L (123 hp) 16V GTI from a polo is one easy option (I think) It's clocking up the miles at the moment so it's not going to be far off.

Had my type R detailed by a local pro from detailing world. My paint before hand was shocking lots of cobwebs and bad scratches. Now its nice and shiney with no scratches or marring. :D

Update of my car:

13-08-09

Fitted the exhaust at long last yesterday, had to fit the cat to the centre off the car, and cut a nut down slightly so that it would clear the cat at one point where it was previously studded.

Offered it up and got it on the car after some faffing about, the nasp downpipe/cat seems about 1-1.5" shorter than the turbo one, so had to pull it forwards at little to fit, but fits fine now its on.

Had another go at polishing tonight as it was cooler than the weekend and the weather was fine.

My Megs 105 sample turned up too so gave that a go, and another go with Megs 83, gave the pad a little spritz with last touch half way through to stop it from drying which seemed to work well.

Anyway photographs, 83 first, this has photographed better than it looks.

Probably achieved 70% correction with #83.

This is 83 using the LED spot light.

And 83 with the camera flash.

Probably got around 95% correction with the #105.

There are a few deep marks which wont come out, that im not going to attempt to remove, especially without a PTG.

Possibly a second pass with #83 will give me the same finish as the single pass with #105 has given me, im not sure, and not sure which would remove more clear coat either?
