The CCNA/Cisco Certifications Thread

Got my 200-120 tomorrow.

Wish me luck, as I failed it last time by 0.4% (821/1000) - Curse you frame-relay

Nearly did it though so you know your close! I'm Learning Frame-relay next :D

Cisco must have changed the pass mark slightly as I thought it was 80%? Doesn't give much room for error.

Whoop, 84.9%

Never again will I ever need to look at frame relay again.
(10 years in telecoms and never seen it used in any network I have worked on)

Now to choose what to do next.
(By next, I mean study over the next year or so to take an exam in about 18 months)
CCNP Voice or Routing and switching - More money in the voice as far as I understand it but as with most voice stuff, its deadly dull.

I have the JNCIA so could follow the SP track in Juniper instead.

Nice one! Frame relaying seemed quite interesting really but as you say it's probably only really used by very old networks and possibly ISP's but that I cant comment on. Doesn't seem too hard for CCNA to be honest but the problem is as it isn't used it's not likely to stick if not configuring it often.

A lot well most of it is all based on serial connections and DCE/DTE which I have never even seen before!

Have you not thought about security CCNP? I will be going security or R&S once I pass.

The general concept of it is but I can imagine on a large scale it can get a little messy. Do you mid me asking what type of company you work for mad Allan? Interesting to see what companies still use this method of encapsulation.

Hi All, thought I'd post in here.

I manage a team that supports a lot of network kit for our customers - predominately Cisco, with some Checkpoint firewalls thrown in here and there.

I'm considering getting myself through some Cisco courses - not because I will ever need to do the work, but just to get a better understanding of it all.

Our hosting - for which the networking is used - is now making big moves to Cloud based offerings for our customers (Cisco UCS, Cisco NEXUS switching, ASA Multi Context Firewalls, ASR Routers etc) and I've just put some of our guys onto a CCNP pathway for the Cisco DataCentre stream.

Is there anything Cisco offer for managers that would be appropriate do you think?

Looking at redoing my CCNA as I let my CCNA: Security expire in Sep :(.

Hopefully not a lot has changed. Aiming to get CCNP this time around hopefully!

HI all,

The official press guides, I have the CCNA - ICND1 book (100-101) however the CD has ICND1, and ICND2 chapters

When ever I load the ICND2 chapters in to the practise question CD, and say select no more than 150 questions, it only gives me pretty much the same questions and only gives me 28.

Is there a limited number of ICND2 questions on this disk? or do I have to buy the ICND2 book?

I'm looking to put myself through some courses to try and obtain a job in the networking field.

What's the bare minimum qualifications needed for starting jobs in this field and is experience pretty much taken over any qualifications?

Experience will pretty much trump certs, this has been the case for a while. If you have no experience then best bet is to do your best to get a cert and try and get in on a junior or 1st level line and work your way up from there

Know a lot about networking fundamentals and the technologies and try and get your foot in. But don't believe that a cert is better than experience

With DJ on this one, the more experience you have the better.

I started as the lowest of the low (ISP, 1st line support) and worked up from that point. I have only done any certs in the last couple of years.

That said CCNA should allow you to jump past the lowest levels.
At that point any new job application is about listing what you have worked on project/technology wise & also any certs you have.

Applied experience is Key.
As said, starting at 1st line is not as bad as it sounds. It is an in and exposure to whatever real life technology is being deployed where you go.
Keeping on top of the technology and your hand in is another. My wife despaired at my lab and call manger set up. However it stopped me being rusty as I had many other telephony technology balls in the air.
:)

Got ICND2 exam coming up end of the month, anyone got any words of wisdom :p

Hopefully I should be fine, time management and stay calm and collected

Last 12 months have seen my recertify my CCNA R&S that expired in 2010 (went the two-exam route, ICND1 and 2). Followed by my CCNA Voice (100%'d that one!), and my CCNP R&S. No courses, just bought the relevant Cisco Press books and I've got a plethora of kit accumulating (all capable of running 15.0 or higher).

Not sure where to go next, although I might go back and get my CCNA Wireless, as a lot of my daily routine involves a fair amount of WLC right now.
