***The DigitalFoundry Face Off Thread***

What amaze me is that AMD with DX12+Async is still 10% to 20% slower then its counter part in DX11.

It would be surprising but the clue is in the video. The people that made the game stated that they were not very comfortable using dx12 so it stands to reason there dx12 version is not really that great. This can be seen with AMD fairing just as well in dx11 as they do in dx12.

but still losing overall against Nvidia Dx11 performance.

Amd's dx12 performance is no stronger than there Dx11 here so it's no surprise. It seems the PC version has nothing in the dx12 version that boosts AMD's performance. Overall Nvidia are stronger in dx11 so it adds up especially when you consider the developer is not comfortable with dx12. You also have to wonder how much time was spent on the PC version.

Like i say though AMD gamers could play from the start where as it was a mess on Nvidia. It's a single player game so those that would play it most likely already have. In all it's another game that showed up Nvidia's dx12 weakness and there dx11 strengths.

Can you tell me which dx12 game are you talking about?

Jeez does everything have to be made into a brand battle. Just be glad Maxwell users can finally play the game without it crashing.

I don't see any brand battle. Just stating facts. It's to little to late for those that have Nvidia and bought through the Windows store. We are only discussing the performance differences between dx11 and 12. It brings up an interesting fact that developers who are not comfortable with dx12 might be making a game that's just as good in dx11 on the Amd side and better by far on the Nvidia side.

It'll take them a while to get used to the new api, until then we're stuck with hack jobs, I think it'll be a couple of years before DX12 starts to shine.

I can't wait till we see some proper DX 12 titles built from the ground up as so far I am super impressed with what I have experienced with dx 12 titles (when implemented right), all the games I have tried with it so far have provided a massive boost on my setup.

Yea so far most have seen AMD gaining performance which brings them to or above Nvidia performance and nothing else. I want to see games pushing the boundaries on both manufacturers in dx12 to push well past what a console is capable. That's what PC gaming used to be about.

That's still the case. Sony and Microsoft are having to refresh their consoles mid-cycle to be able to provide (they hope) 30fps 4K gaming at generally mid-high settings in most games. If you have the hardware for it you can do 60fps 4K ultra on PC.

There's still a gulf there, it's just not as apparent now consoles are HD and in many games the difference in graphical quality between medium and ultra is not that huge.

Yea but if i am honest the PC games are now Console ports with added graphics. They used to be PC games that left the console in the dust. I play both and other than frame rate things are not night and day even with the week console hardware. Remember back in the day the consoles were pretty powerful on release and not long after the PC games were still looking so much better. Back then lazy ports were not really a part of playing on PC compared to now. The first Call of Duty blew me away and now it's just a lazy port.

Sure PC hardware is miles ahead but for how far ahead it is we are certainly not seeing it visually.

Yup and that is why I am going to be picking up a ps 4 pro at some point, quite a few games these days are barely any better looking on the PC now and with a 4K HDR OLED TV, despite the game maybe not having quite as good shadows or whatever, I am willing to bet that OLED + 4k + HDR will make up for that over any £1000+ rig hooked up to a crappy LCD monitor (unless you happen to have your PC nearby to be able to connect it to the TV as well :p)

Other reasons for myself to move to ps 4 pro:

- games being released in an unsatisfactory state for PC i.e. broken/buggy or performing poorly, lost count as to the amount of games being released in a half assed state now, spend more time faffing about trying to get a game running well than actually playing the game... granted console gaming isn't exactly smooth sailing at times either but it is certainly a heck of a lot better than PC gaming lately....
- PS has got so many good exclusives now
- PC hardware in general is just getting too expensive for little reward and things are only going to get worse if AMD don't deliver with zen and vega

390 performing the worst I've seen in this game. No excuse when the 480, essentially the same card and the slower of the two in a lot of tests, is murdering the 390.

It's a weird game indeed though, one minute my 390 is hitting 60fps in the forests and that's at 1440p running mix of high and ultra. Then other times same area same time of day it struggles to hit 40fps. This game seriously in need of optimisation or AMD really need a better driver.

Looks like once again AMD is having problems with shader caching.

Same here, November 10 I'm buying my first console since the PS2. I've never played games like Red dead redemption, Unchartered, last of us etc and the pro should offer decent framerates at 1080p so I'm in.

Is this game even using Async compute? Not seen anything that says it does.
From the devs they struggled with DX12 and are more at home using DX11. The poor show on this game from dx12 isn't the Api fault it's the devs lack of understanding.

Amen to that, bro. Agree with every word.

Hence my 970 will stay as my PC gaming card for quite some time to come.

My last console was the 360, I've always preferred xbox overall but the PS has much better exclusives as you have listed there and loads more coming, the scorpio sounds nice but no point getting it if I can't play some of the best games out there...

Yea my 290 will be staying for a while yet as well.

Likewise as well as my i5 750 etc. :D :p

I'm pretty much done with pc gaming now as well to be honest, this last year has left a nasty taste in my mouth. Pc gaming now is stupidly expensive, most games are arriving in buggy state, very poor multi gpu support and the difference in visuals now is really not worth it.

Unlike you though nexus mate, PS4 pro isn't good enough, save your money and get a Scorpio in a year.
