During my time on LNG carriers I had the distinct “pleasure” of visiting the loading terminal at Soyo, Angola, which is in the mouth of the Congo. On one occasion, as we were preparing to leave with the crew fore & aft at their mooring stations, and tugs about to arrive, I remember hearing one of the Filipino AB’s call over the the radio “Uhhh, Captain, there is a deadman in the water”. And Lo and behold, there he was, some poor ******* face down in the river, being carried along with the current while a bird just nonchalantly pecks away at his back. We had a pilot onboard from the port authority and his reaction was to shrug and merely state “it happens”.
