The Dissertation thread

Thats why I did a practical based dissertation. Even if it failed it wasn't wrong. Thus is the beauty of science :D

:D

Practically I've already passed my dissertation with the 4 weeks I did in the summer, the rest of it is to gain the extra 30% for a first.:p

Anyone else doing their dissertation at the moment?

I had to hand in a draft copy (of 2,500 words...) a few days ago, and have 3 more weeks before my deadline. I'm starting to despise it with a passion at the moment.

Geoscience disertations seem to take forever, 4 weeks of independent fieldwork and writing up the equivilent of a journal based on those results.:(

The people doing geology at my uni have to do 6 weeks independent mapping. Us geophysicist get away with it hehe.

Did a dissertation on internet piracy last year - 15,000 words - good times.

Aod - are you implying some of your essays haven't been fully referenced? Every piece had to be fully referenced

The research and analysis part of my Final Year Project comes to around 14k words, now to plan the project, develop it and evaluate it. Looking to have a 20-25k report and a fully working application at the end of it, fun!

Aod - are you implying some of your essays haven't been fully referenced? Every piece had to be fully referenced

what i mean is that the format of the essay had to be like this:

fact [reference], fact [reference], comparison [reference], conclusion [reference], face [reference] for the entire thing.

5000 words, just started the project for it and I've got 5 more weeks of data collection and analysis followed by a 2 week write up.

Already written a detailed intro/methods, 1000 words :)

e: Also 60 references is nothing, I have that much for my intro, boo fricking hoo ;(

I'm starting my 10,000 word dissertation next week, woop! Anyone done an essay on legal frameworks for international human rights protection?

I have a 10,000 word dissertation due in 8 weeks - not started writing it and still collecting data  - getting worried! It's on child language impairments and wish I had chose something else

Mine is due in on Feb 6th, and should be about 70+ pages. Currently done 30, so starting to pick it up a bit! I've done all the working out (my degree is Chemical Engineering) but it's all in MATLAB/Excel so I need to write it up formally now.

Ours is a little strange - it is marked 30% group work and 70% individual dissertation. We finished the group one back in November - ours was 31,000 words! (88 pages) I think my individual one will end up around the same length.

Mines 10,000 - 20,000 words, plus already done a 3500 - 5000 word progress report, plus a working piece of software, mine stands at nearly 1000 lines, some of my friends doing websites / web apps are on 2000+ lines, plus we got a 15-30min presentation to give to 2 lecturers, and its all due the end of April :)
Glad I started and did all my coding last semester, some of my friends haven't even started coding yet :o

Why is everyone's so short?

Mine will be about 40 pages and a few thousand lines of code in the appendix.

10,000 words is about the standard for a mapping report (ie published or done for a company) and it's actually just a guideline maximum amount, as far as I know 7,000 well written words wouldn't loose any marks.

I always assumed a dissertiation was about 10,000 words anyway, 20,000 seems extreme.

Started my Master's dissertation last week. Gotta write the literature review, summary poster and some other crap for May 8th, and then write the whole thing up including outcome for September.

So I've been sitting on my arse playing computer games; not researching the impact of advertising on different demographics. Oh well :D
