The Dissertation thread

Did my Dissertation back in 2006. 24,000 words and a fully working application with ~25,000 lines of code. Plus I wrote a paper that ended up going to Siggraph - It nearly killed me.

Titled: "The Procedural Generation and Accelerated Rendering of Real-Time Outdoor Environments."

And it looked something like this:

<5k is very short for a dissertation. Mine was ~13k. I thought all written essays had to be fully referenced? Do you get essays where you don't?

Was that aimed at my post?

If so the 3,500 words would make around 9,000, which I think is around what I will end up with after writing what I need to write.:)

Don't even talk to me about my dissertation  :(

This ^^^^^

I have got a 6000 word dissertation, 2000 word newspaper scientific report and 15 minute talk to a bunch of posh year 11's. I'm starting to think suicide might be an option.

However on my course i got to choose between:

a 12,000 word essay,
my thing,
an 8 week lab project (3 times a week from 10-6)

Whatever one you choose, you still have to do another 3 essays whilst you're trying to do your final year project. I hate life atm. Unless i'm drunk.

Starting to piece mine together now. Finally know where I am headed but still have worries in my mind at the prospect of a single written piece over 10,000 words. Don't think I have ever done more than 2500 in a single piece before.
Really not looking forward to all the referencing I need to do on it though. But I'll get there eventually :p

i did my dissertation in 3 days

including a "6 month study" and apparently i read about 30 books.

thing is i gave myself 5 days and then realised that it was due on 5th not 7th :(

Ouch! Do you reckon you did ok with it or was it just a major rush job?

Referencing is a pain, so far I have 17, and been typing them up as I go along so it's not been too bad. Haven't done the background or discussion yet so the number of references could double!

I'm doing a 15,000 word dissertation for my final year. Got till the end of April to do it though, currently writing the main bulk as my intro and research is now done.

I currently have 6 weeks left, and due to having so much other work (And being lazy for a couple of weeks) I have a lot to do in a short time.

Need to produce a 15,000 Word document talking about polygonal restraints, and "Next Gen" techniques for modelling. Design, Model, Texture and Normal map a character model, get it into a game engine, and get people to view + give feedback on it to determin how much next gen techniques improve low polygonal models.

Jcb33.

Can you stop talking about disserations. I've barely started and this thread is reminding me of how much work i've got to do.

Yes please :(

I stopped reading here because I need to get started on my dissertation but have too many other essays to work on before I can even get started on it :( And now it's all on my mind again.

Thank you OcUK :p

if your talking to me, it was a major rush job, if i get over 50% id be over the moon, the one thing i cant do is "come up with your own question" that is the hardest thing possible.

Assuming you're on a games course like me, we've got a bit longer than 6 weeks haven't we!?

Well yes, *Waves*, but I am leaving 2 weeks free at the end for proof reading, correction, printing and binding.

2 Weeks = Research + Writing
3 Weeks = Modelling
1 Week = User group test + evaluation and conclusion.

Got 10,000 words to write on IPv6. :( Done about 1,000 so far which aint a lot as its got to be in at the end of April but ive read quite a bit and have a load of references. Still waiting for my questionnaires to come back from companies that have implemented v6 though!

got around 5 weeks to get mine in, the deadline used to be the end of April but this year they decided to move it forward to the start as they had trouble marking all of them, how nice of them.....

we had to have the interim report handed in back in November which for me was 9500 words, the recommended length is 12,000 for us but i think i'll be way over that

mines on chassis optimisation using FEA techniques btw, any other engineers on this forum?

Haha some of you guys writing and thinking 2000 words is long, funny.

My undergrad was a 14000 word dissertation on the optical properties of light in water

My post grad was Artificial Intelligence using Java, 21000 words, over 360 java files of 1000-2000 words of code each

N E V E R A G A I N

Worked out though, somehow iv ended up working as a science technician in the biomedical industry and got my eye on working my way up to fully fledged scientist.

Wait, you guys haven't finished yet???:D
Mine was finished and handed in on the 13th february (deadline was 17th), was 14972 words.
Topic was "The second Danish-Prussian war of 1864 and how it has affected Danish Nationalism".
