Glad to be of help, should be a very intresting little project, i couldnt believe it when i first got pointed in the direction of this DAC as i hadnt imagined finding anything decent enough to buy the rite side of £100

Which ones have you built? And would it be feasible to combine one with the above DAC, in the same container?

I guess it would be ok, but I'd be tempted to have some shielding between the PCB's anyway.

I've only built the amp6 basic, really easy with thru-hole parts, no need to solder SMD things - this is the main thing that puts me off buying thier other kits. If you need more power and channels, you could do a lot worse than the amp 9 basic.

Also, try and use a good 12V or 24V PSU with these amps. I found a real nice one of the bay, 24V 12A output, less than £30, and next to no ripple. :cool:

Yeah I'd already thought about the shielding.

The main problem I suppose will be the different rails required for each circuit.

Any tips on what to look for in a PSU?

edit: There's no problem with SMD stuff, I've currently got access to a very well-equipped electronics lab at work. :)

Even with the right gear, SMD requires practice, but some people prefer soldering SMD's even!

Anyway, just look for a PSU that will supply the rated current with as little ripple as possible. I was powering my amp6 with a LCD screen 12v PSU for a while, and there was some 50Hz hum on my speakers.

Tested it out with a battery pack, hum gone, so crappy PSU basically.
 
I'm thinking of getting the Amp-6 kit. What does it come with? What extra parts would i need?
Would my PC PSU be ok to power it?

Well a PC PSU isn't ideal but it should work.

I got the Amp6 basic, the extra's I needed was basically a chassis, small heatsink plus a few connectors and cables. Everything else is supplied.
 
So, would anyone be up for building a Millett Max in the near future? I want to make one but I'm not entirely decided on what parts to get, etc, would be nice to have someone else to talk things over with.

I would love a tube amp/preamp in my setup just for the look it brings, undecided weather im gonna have a pre amp or headphone amp, that and i need to read into tubes before i do anything as i have no idea about them.
 
Hi guys

I have been silently browsing this thread for a while now with great interest. The work on here is great.

I really want a go at building a Tube Amp for my iPod to go with a pair of bookshelf speakers. So I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction for a kit amp. I am a bit of a noob but know how to solder up circuits and studied amplifiers etc at uni.

Any help getting started would be great.

I rarely worked with SMD, I think the main thing is to get the right tip for the job. I used an 18W when I did some work with a tiny point tip. It worked but I think a small chisel tip and mabye 25W would be better.

I agree with Mike and don't suggest valves for a first project. They do indeed use a lot of high voltages and are also quite irrelevant for most electronics you encounter. Something like a chip amp might be best. One like this will usually do for bedrooms http://www.chipamp.com/lm1875.shtml. I built one into a case like these http://www.hammondmfg.com/1455.htm. Really good compact amp, looked decent too and quite cheap. I managed to break it though :( . Will possibly re-build as it made a great practise amp for my electric drumkit :)

but for a quick rundown its a dual mono amp based on the Symasym design. Its biased to give about 1W per channel Class-A but 40W per channel class AB is available. Regulated supplies are used. 1W doesn't sound a lot but bear in mind this is for efficient planar tweeters crossed above 4khz so in reality it may never use the class AB power!

A bit of an odd request:

Does anyone know of any cases/project boxes with transparent lids/front panels?

Something along the lines of an aluminium Hammond enclosure but with a perspex lid. It'll be used for my new class D amp/DAC when I decide to start building.
