The do I or don't I, go to work thread

Oh well, better get to work. I phoned up and asked If I could work from home, but they wouldn't land a few airbuses down my road. Some employers really won't help out.

The snows not bad enough to not go in but I'm dreading the drive home once it's all frozen :(

We've got 4x4s rented on standby with drivers on call to collect people that can't make it in. Anyone not phoning in asking for help, or anyone that doesn't come into work isn't getting paid. Of course unless it's absolutely impossible, and I mean, impossible, or dangerous, and in absolute exceptional circumstances, people will be expected to get into work. Some of my managers are staying in a hotel round the corner from work so they can make it in tomorrow. Me, I'm driving home, and driving back in tomorrow as usual. :)

Have they considered a vpn on the radar? :)

I've just heard my autosocks are on their way and I should have some Michelin winter tyres tomorrow. To be honest it's more for the lake district next month as there's only one hill round here that has troubled me and I've not got stuck yet :)

Touch wood.

Think of the ping man!!!!!!1111

No respawning for those passengers if you get lag.

Tons more snow today, so for some reason we got sent home from School half way through the day :)

It was the teachers that couldn't get in, not us.

You've bought new tyres for a couple of weeks bad weather?

Hardly any snow in Bristol so I doubt I'll have any trouble getting to work at the weekend.

Fair play to people working from home / staying at home. From previous experience even if you do go in to work, you do hardly any work due to people being missing / building snowmen in the car park. :D

I have a spare set of rims so they'll just get swapped each year - they'll last longer only being used half the time so I'll not lose in the long run. They'll give much better grip in cold wet weather as well, not just for snow and ice.

You could even swap them over on the same rims but you'd need to pay someone to do it and then storing tyres without rims is more difficult (rotating them).

Well I managed to get to work. Getting back, not so great. Had to abandon the car half way up the shallowest hill around me (which I drove down this morning to get to work).
All the nice powdery relatively grippy snow this morning has just compacted and frozen to ice.

Luckily I managed to slide into a sort of parked position by the kerb, but still blocking someone on their drive. Fortunately I knocked on the door and the chap who owned was actually parked across the street because he couldn't get back onto his drive!

Ive just had to call in a nd tell them I cannot make it in. Took me 40 minutes to pick up a lad in the same town and do a round trip and drop him back off. 2.5 miles at the most. The roads are terrible, it was a whiteout within seconds. I tried my best, but it was just too dangerous. So thats me and 3 others I pick up on the way with no way of getting into work (Buses and metros all off too!!)

EDIT: ^^ WTF spam bot?

Did a 3 hour commute today to get into school for 5 minutes before we got sent home! At least we have the next 2 days off, health and safety is good for something at least.

Because its sitll snowing here, I arranged for me to be able to work from the local police station rather than going all the way in the headquarters. Strange thing is that I'm the only one here all night!

At least I had a 30 min journey that wasn't too bad vs a 2 hour journey of getting stuck on hills.

walked home from work today, heaviest snow ive seen over here. it was nice and peaceful and funny seeing cars almost slide out. most of the snow would have melted by the time i need to leave to get into work tomorrow.

I tried to get in but decided after getting to work only to find that the carpark was not gritted, a foot of virgin powder in the main car park and one guy was spinning wheels in the visitors area.. I decided rather than get stuck and not being able to get back home that I'd just go home.
Only managed to leave one voicemail as everyones didn't seem to be working and they've not sorted out VPN access yet... So hopefully the VPN access will be sorted tomorrow..

As a contractor I don't get paid for time off due to snow..

Not much chance of not going to work for me, especially given that I then drive all night in whatever weather.

Wimps the lot of 'em! :D

Well, in a minute I will be trying again to get to work. There's still snow on the ground, but I can't tell more than that atm. Wish me luck.
