Got this on PS3 and while the gameplay is awesome, the framerate is terrible and it's crashed on me at least 6 times since I got it on Wednesday. I've burned out playing it for now

That happened to me in my other game (before i restarted). You must have been attacked by a vampire somewhere along the line. There is a quest you can do to cure yourself, but it is pretty long winded from what i have read.
This is the reason i started a new game, as i was only around level 3 or so.

I have another question... Not sure if I'm doing something wrong I'm a destro/conj type Mage and everywhere I go I basically have to summon my pet let it fight and hang back as I do 0 damage to any mobs and I die in 1 hit. Am I doing something wrong?

Weapon nothing mate I normally dual cast and mainly use double flames or firebolt or the ice/lightening equivalent. Got 4 points in conj, 4 in destruction (including + 25% fire damage ) also 3 points in restoration to try and keep myself alive! I got a staff of corruption but it doesn't seem to do anything rather confused and I'm like 20 hours or do played lol.

How far are you? the combo destroys until level 15-20 or so. After that its just as you described =/

How To Cure Vampirism

If you’ve contracted the disease, you won’t become a vampire for three days. Until then, you can get rid of the disease with any common disease-curing potion.
You can also use the Shrine to Talos outside Whiterun or Dragonsreach, activating the shrine will cure you of all diseases.
Before speaking to anyone, make sure you’re no longer a Stage 4 vampire. Stage 4 vampires are attacked on sight, to avoid this, wait until night and drink the blood of a sleeping person. Even sleeping beggars will do. Just crouch/sneak and interact with a sleeping NPC to drink their blood.
If you’re still having trouble drinking blood, remember that you have two useful abilities as a Stage 4 vampires — Embrace of Shadows, and Vampire Seduction. Embrace of Shadows turns you invisible, while Vampire Seduction will make an NPC calm and cease wanting to attack you.
Once you’re a Stage 1 vampire, normal diseas cures will no longer work. You’ll need a better way.
To begin your quest, speak with any Inn Keeper or Bartender about rumors. They’ll tell you that a man named Falion in Morthal is studying vampires.
Find Morthal east of Fort Snowhawk. Once there, talk to Falion and he’ll discuss how to cure vampirism.
He’ll tell you to get a Black Soul Gem. If you don’t have one, Falion will sell you one. Before being cured, you’ll need to fill the Black Soul Gem.
To fill a Black Soul Gem, you’ll need to cast a Soul Trap spell on a human, then kill them. Any human will work, including bandits and enemies.
You’ll need to obtain a Soul Trap spell, sold by any magic vendor. If you’re really desperate, try the College of Winterhold, or explore Whiterun to find a shop. If you don’t have high magic skills, just purchase a Soul Trap scroll.
With a filled Black Soul Gem, return to Falion and talk to him to complete the ritual. You’re now cured of vampirism!

Why's that? Do you need more powerful versions of the spells?

No, mage damage is front loaded talent wise, it owns for so long but you reach a point where the enemies health will increase beyond your ability to nuke something in one bar.

You through enchantments and such can extend your mana/magica or whatever its called to be almost forever lasting, but its no fun to take 30+ seconds per mob.

Well that's a bummer. Are there no atronachs that can tackle higher level enemies? In Oblivion the frost atronach could take on practically anything. :D

Well, yeah they are pretty powerful :) but the AI and pathing ability is just non existent

I just realised that wasn't what the poster was asking. D'oh. He wanted an alternative to just conjuring everything up. :p

I haven't looked at the destruction perks to see if they would help any.
